COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

1. What is the importance of Intercultural Communication?

The diversity of people and culture impacts communication. Communicating with

people coming from unfamiliar culture poses challenges. But the success of

intercultural communication does not depend on language skills alone, but on

openness and sensitivity to cultural diversity, as well as on a genuine desire to

understand and be understood.

2. Are you familiar with some English varieties? If so, what are some of vocabulary

words present in these varieties but are not present in the variety that you speak?

Aside from lexicon, are there other features that you are familiar with?

Some of the English varieties are familiar with me but there are also varieties

that are new to me such as the popcorn, which is based from what I have know

it is a hard kernels that swell up and burst open with a pop when heated. But in

Malaysian, its a loquacious person which means a person who talks a lot, and

often too much. Lexicon has also similarities with Thesaurus dictionary.

3. How do you become more aware of the language features of the post-colonial

varieties?

By having a broad understanding and less criticising of other features of

language. Because understanding others’ language can lessen

misunderstandings and less criticising can help promote camaraderie amidst of

our indifferences.
4. How do you think can you begin to communicate with people from other cultures

and avoid conflicts and misunderstandings?

By being considerate and having patience. Communicating with other people

with other language or culture is a challenge because both of you cannot speak

the same language where you can understand each other. But having patience

and being considerate is a big help to be able to express what you really want to

say or express. Using body language and eliciting feedback is a plus.

5. Have you talked to people with diverse linguistic and cultural background? Have

you experience any difficulty? If so, how did you manage the conversation? What

strategies did you employ?

Yes and talking with them is really challenging but happy because I really love

learning new things and learning a new culture and language is healthy to

everyone. It is healthy because for me, once you learn others’ culture and

language, you tend to have a broad knowledge and background about a certain

diversity and even though its difficult to catch up, atleast you can understand

each other little by little either by using body languages or trying to learn the

language and culture itself.

6. How do formal and informal registers affect the way one speaks? How do they

affect one’s way of writing?

Formal registers are the formal speakers and writers wherein it is appropriate to

use in Professional writings and more impersonal, objective and factual. While

Informal registers uses only ordinary language and more often a

extemporaneous speaker which is more casual in tone and appropriate for

personal relationship conversation. Both of this registers differ from the way in

writings, Formal registers were used in Project proposals, position papers and

business letters while Informal registers writing is more intimate and emotional.
7. What are other communicative situations in which one uses formal and informal

registers? Why do you think so?

When a person is participating as a good orator of a certain piece and the

audience are quitely listening to be able to understand what the speaker is trying

to say which is a Formal register. On the other hand, if a guy is writing a letter to

her lover is an example of Informal register because it is more personal and

intimate relationship.

8. Do you know of other type of registers similar to legalese and textese? How do they

differ from each other.

Legalese or legal language is highly characterized by archaic expressions,

technical jargon intrinsic only to the community of legal professionals, embedded

structures, nominalizations, passive voice and even kilometric sentences.

Textese or language of texts uses abbreviations, acronyms, slang words and

expressions. E-mailese is the language of email marketing. It is the language of

sales, or revenue. It is the language for reaching customers directly, relevantly,

personally.

There are English varieties that are familiar with me and there are also varieties

that are new to me. For example is the Actsy of Singapore English which means

“to show off” but the word I know is “Impress” which means to show off also,

By seeing the world in a different aspect and viewing others’ with broad

understanding. Its not just all about being aware but also to perceive things in a

wide aspect and to avoid misunderstandings.

By not shouting, respecting and matured enough to understand others’ culture,

tradition, belief and language considering body language and good expressions.

Yes, actually there are a lot of circumstances wherein I need or I ended up

talking with a person with a different culture but same religion. It is difficult but

the more I find it difficult the more I strive to understand a person just to

communicate well and be understood.
