This document differentiates the characteristics of engineers and managers. Engineers focus on technical tasks and have certainty in decisions based on adequate technical information, while managers focus on people, resources, and projects with less certainty. Engineers perform individual tasks and rely on technical expertise, while managers direct others' work and rely on interpersonal skills. The document provides two examples of engineer managers at known firms, and relates that engineering activities need management, so engineers sometimes learn management skills to lead technical teams. Engineering management combines engineering knowledge and management expertise.

1. Differentiate Engineers and Managers in terms of:
CHARACTERISTICS ENGINEERS MANAGERS
Focus Technical/Scientific tasks People (talents, innovation, relationships); Resources (capital, knowledge, process know- how); Projects (tasks, procedure, policy)
Decision Making Adequate technical Fuzzy information under
information with great certainty (people’s behavior, certainty customer needs, market forecasts) Involvement Perform individual tasks Direct work of others (planning, leading, organizing, controlling) Process Outcomes Quantitative, measurable Qualitative, less measurable, except financial results, when applicable Effectiveness Rely on technical expertise Rely on interpersonal skills and personal dedication to get work done through people (motivation, delegation) Dependency Autonomous Interdependent to others Creativity Technology centered People centered (conflict resolution, problem solving, political alliance, networks building) Bottom Line “How” (operational) “What” and “Why” (strategic)
2. Provide at least 2 engineer managers of a known firm.
Jorge Tesaluna- Group Engineering Manager at Universal Robina Corporation-

3. Relate engineering and management.
Management is concerned with planning, organizing, leading, and controlling an
organization’s resources to achieve its mission and objectives. Engineers are known for their great contributions to the world’s civilization. There are many areas where their presence is necessary like research, design and management, testing, manufacturing, construction sales, consulting, government, teaching and management. Engineering activities need to be managed and engineers are sometimes placed in positions where they have to learn management skills. Management expertise is incorporated with engineering knowledge to lead teams of specialists in highly technical tasks. When engineering and management are combined it is called engineering management. It is the application of the practice of management to the practice of engineering.
