The document summarizes a course on the design of tall structures. The 16-week course aims to teach students the principles of stability in tall buildings and how to design tall buildings to resist earthquakes and winds. The course outcomes are for students to gain an understanding of design philosophies for high-rise structures, how wind loads affect buildings, different structural systems for tall buildings, and the stability of tall buildings. The course content covers design criteria, wind and earthquake loading, behaviors of structural systems like rigid frames and shear walls, modeling and analysis techniques, and stability analysis of tall buildings.

Design of Tall Structures

Duration :16 Wks 3 1 0 4 5

Pre requisites: Design of steel structures and RCC structures

Course objectives:
1. The objective of this course is to make students to learn principles of stability of tall
buildings,
2. To design the tall buildings for earthquake and wind resistance.
3. To evaluate the performance of tall structures for strength and stability

Course outcomes: At the end of the course, the student will be able to
1. Gain the design philosophy for high rise structures
2. Predominance of wind load behaviour
3. Behaviour of various structural systems
4. Stability of tall buildings

Course contents:

Unit 1-Design Criteria:

Design philosophy, loading, sequential loading, and materials – high performance concrete, fiber
reinforced concrete, lightweight concrete, design mixes. Loading and Movement: Gravity loading:
Dead and live load, methods of live load reduction, Impact, Gravity loading; Construction loads

Unit 2-Wind loading

Static and dynamic approach, Analytical and wind tunnel experimentation method. Earthquake
loading: Equivalent lateral force, modal analysis, combinations of loading, working stress design,
Limit state design, Plastic design.

Unit 3-Behaviors of Various Structural Systems

Factors affecting growth, Height and structural form; High rise behavior, Rigid frames, braced
frames, in-filled frames, shear walls, coupled shear walls, wall-frames, tubular, cores, Futigger –
braced and hybrid mega system.

Unit 4-Analysis
Modeling for approximate analysis, accurate analysis and reduction techniques, analysis of
building as total structural system considering overall integrity and major subsystem interaction,
analysis for member forces, Stability of Tall Buildings: Overall buckling analysis of frames, wall
frames, approximate methods, second order effects of gravity of loading, P-Delta analysis,
simultaneous first order and P-Delta analysis, Transnational, Torsional instability
