The Small Key

Summary: It was a warm day on the farm in which a couple lives, a woman named Soledad who was
married to Pedro Buhay. One morning she asked and organize to stitch some of her husband's shirts in a
locked trunk. Pedro took out from his pocket two keys, a large and small key. Pedro gave to Soledad the
large key to his trunk on the first instance. When he left for work, Soledad found the small key fell to the
floor. Pedro values the small key and Soledad hints that there is something on it. Eventually she opened
the small trunk that has a clothing owned by Pedro's first wife. Soledad has a lot of questions in her mind
like why it is that he keeps her old clothing? She despises that feeling and turned the clothing into ashes.
Soledad even try to look sick. Pedro in return was bitter and was expecting Soledad will talked about the
matter.
Theme of the story: Love is a limitless powerful tool that one can either make or break a person. Love
encompasses boundless emotions from the shallow habit, middling virtues to the deepest interpersonal
affection one can experience. In the story, it specifically points that love comprises the faces of trust,
forgiveness, letting go, jealousy, hatred, understanding, consideration and respect. Locked in our hearts
the people whom we truly treasure and be the master key that opens the gateway of making them happy.
Symbolism- The symbolism present in the story were:
1. Small key- an object in which he could carry all day that will reminds him of his first wife. Thus,
an opener that Soledad used to free that past feelings Pedro had.
2. Trunk- a part of Pedro’s in which the memories of his dead wife is hidden and still locked.
3. Ashes of the cloth- Jealousy, hatred and fear of Soledad
4. Cloth of the dead’s wife of Pedro- representation of his dead wife in which he still treasures.

Characters
Main characters
1. Pedro Buhay or Indo- husband of Soledad, hardworking, a man whom somehow have an
everlasting love to his deceased wife.
2. Soledad or Choleng- an affectionate woman towards his husband that fears of losing him and the
relationship that they have. Easily carried by her emotions
Tia Maria, Deceased wife of Pedro and Dr. Santos as the supporting characters mentioned.
Setting
Time: Early morning, the sun a sky that was blue and Afternoon since it is a very hot day.
Place: Farm and the house where the couple lives
Conflict
Man vs. Self- When Soledad got the small key and pushes herself to open the trunk and saw the cloth
of the deceased wife of Pedro. Questions, Jealousy and fear arises from within that causes the conflict.
