Resource Levelling & Smoothening

Resource levelling and smoothing are techniques used to optimize resource utilization in project scheduling. Resource levelling involves rescheduling activity start times to ensure peak resource demand does not exceed availability, which may change the project duration. Resource smoothing shifts activity start times within available floats to generate a more uniform demand for unlimited resources while keeping the project duration the same. The document provides examples of resource scheduling tables and illustrates how shifting activity B and E start times reduces peak resource needs from 9 to 7 while maintaining the network logic and project duration.

Resource Levelling & Smoothening

Resource

 A Resource is a physical variable such as Labour, Finance, Equipment

and Space required for successful completion of a Project within
stipulated time frame
 Types of Resources:
 Manpower
 Machinery
 Materials
 Money
 Miscellaneous
Resources

1) Multiple Activity –
Same Resources
2) Simultaneous Activity
Availability
– Same Resources
3) Multiple Project –
Common Pool

Limited Unlimited
 Resource Allocation
 Deployment of Resources according to priority. When Resources are limited
and conflicting demands are made for the same type of resources, a
systematic method or the allocation of resources becomes essential.
 Resource Smoothening
 The total project duration is not changed, but some of the activities start
times are shifted by their available floats so that a uniform demand for the
resources is generated. However, the resources are considered to be
unlimited.
 Resource Levelling
 The activity start times are so rescheduled that the peak demand for a
particular resource does not cross the available limit of the resources. Thus,
the resources are considered to be limited. Total Project Duration may be
changed.

Possible Solution – 1 with Activity B & E
 Maximum Requirement from 9 to 7
 9 Resources for 5 days and 7 resources for 1 day
only
 Average consumption of 5 resources was for 9
days which is reduced by 7 days
 Network Logic is intact
 Project Duration is not changed
