TITLE: ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING -II
COURSE CODE : 2ENGSC0202 CREDITS : 04
DURATION OF EXAMINATION TOTAL: 100 Marks
MINOR TEST : 01 Hour MINOR TEST: 40 Marks
MAJOR TEST : 2.5 Hours MAJOR TEST: 60 Marks

OBJECTIVE:

The purpose of the Course is to equip the students with a comprehensive understanding of the
important aspects of English that will allow them to communicate effectively in the language.

UNIT I: (12 HOURS)


Trends in Linguistics theories. Beginning of modern linguistics, Language Varieties,
Aspects of Language Study -- phonology, grammar, lexicology, Semantics, Discourses,
Bloomfield and American Structuralism. Neo feathian theory, Transformative Generative
Grammar.

UNIT II: (12 HOURS)


Language Teaching Theories
The Audio- Lingual Method
The Audio-Visual Method
Features, sources and history, techniques and theoretical assumptions thereof; cognitive theory.

UNIT III: (12 HOURS)


Teaching the Mechanics of Pronunciation;
Vocabulary ; Reading and Writing.

UNIT IV: (12 HOURS)


Audio- Visual and supplementary aids planning for a Language Laboratory, Language
Laboratory Systems, specific advantage provided by language laboratory.

UNIT V: (12 HOURS)


Language Testing; Techniques to test production of lexical units, testing auditory
comprehension, how to test speaking ability, achievement, diagnostic and aptitude
testing.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SETTERS AND CANDIDATES:


Minor Test. ( 20+20= 40 Marks)
Two Internal Assessment Tests (C1) and (C2) shall be held for the first 20% and the next 20% of
the syllabus having 20 marks for each test i.e. covering first unit in 1st test and II unit in 2nd test
out of five units. Time allotted: 1 Hour; Marks % Weightage : 20%.
Each Test will comprise of two parts.
Part A : 3 long answer type questions of 5 marks each and student will have to attempt any 2.
Part B : 7 short answer type questions of 2 marks each and the student will have to attempt any
5 questions.

Major Test (60 Marks)


End Semester Test will be of two parts.

Section A : This section will cover the whole syllabus.


• 9 Multiple Choice /Short answer type questions of 1 mark each.
9Qx1= 9 Marks.
• 5 Multiple Choice /Short answer type questions of 3 mark each.
5Q x 3= 15 Marks.

Section B: 3 Questions with one question from each of the Unit 3, 4 and 5 with Internal Choice.
Each Question will have 2 parts (a and b).

Part A: Long Answer Type of Questions. 3Q x 8 = 24 Marks.


Part B : Medium Answer Type of Questions. 3Q x 4 = 12 Marks.
