IX SM 5 Jan 2017

The document contains two passages. The first asks the reader to answer questions about a poem called "Rain in Summer", including what the central idea is and what the rain drops falling on the roof are compared to. The second passage discusses the importance of rest for good health. It explains that when food is burnt in the body cells at a high rate, waste cannot be carried away fast enough, causing fatigue. Fatigue lowers resistance and causes mistakes. Rest can be achieved through quiet activities or hobbies with low energy, but the best rest is sleep.

Another thing that is essential to good health is rest. When food is burnt in the cells of the
body at a high rate of speed, the blood cannot carry away the waste materials as fast as they
are formed. They, therefore, accumulate in the cells and prevent them from working
properly, causing ‘fatigue’. Fatigue makes people ill-tempered, slows up their thinking
powers and causes them to make mistakes, and lowers their resistance to disease. Sitting
or lying down quietly are good ways of resting, and so is working at some hobby that does
not require much physical energy. But nothing can take the place of sleep.

i. Why can’t the blood carry away the waste materials as fast as they are formed?
ii. What is the cause of fatigue?
iii. How is fatigue harmful to us?
iv. How can we get rid of fatigue?
v. What is the best rest for a man?
