Wild Magic

This document proposes homebrew rules to modify the Wild Magic Sorcerer in Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition to make the chaotic magic more frequent. It replaces the 1 on the d20 that triggers a Wild Magic Surge with a 20 or higher. It also introduces a new "Static" mechanic where casting spells builds up points that increase the chance of a Surge, with the points dissipating after a Surge occurs.

Even Wilder Magic:

a 5e Sorcerer Homebrew

These are unofficial rules for Dungeons and Dragons 5th

Edition that modify the Wild Magic Sorcerer archetype
found in the Players’ Handbook. Unless otherwise stated,
it uses the same rules as the PHP.
They are intended to make the class more chaotic—
under the official rules, surges are exceptionally rare. This
page intends to change that. Brace yourselves.

Elithen stumbled back and raised her hand. She tried to

cast a protective spell, but it fizzled—the lich had been a
powerful wizard in life, and death hadn’t changed much.
Her skull hit the hard temple floor, and she tasted copper.
She couldn’t see: her vision had gone out when she hit
the floor. She could hear ancient strips of cloth been dragged
across the floor, smell the sickly-sweetness of formaldeyhe and
grave dirt. She started to laugh.
The lich stopped moving, and its voice rasped up from its
dessicated throat.
“Whhat’s, so, funnny? I amm smarter than you, little bird;
I know all you knew, and thenn more. I know yourr mind; I
know yourr move before you make itt.”
Her vision started to return, and she stared up at him.
“Buddy,” she said, “even I don’t know what I’m gonna do
next.”
She clicked her fingers, and magic happened.

MODIFICATION: under the Wild Magic Surge

heading, replace “if you roll a 1” with “if you roll a 20 or
higher”.

ADDITION: under the Wild Magic Surge heading, add

the following:

Static

Wild Magic Sorcerers accumulate static. This is a buildup

of magical force that makes unexpected events more likely.
Each time the sorcerer casts a spell of 1st-level or higher,
they gain static points equal to the spell slot extended.
For each static point, they add +1 to the roll to
determine whether they experience a Wild Magic Surge.
After the sorcerer rolls on the Wild Magic Table, all static
points are vented and static returns to 0.
