GEOSTORM: A Movie Review

After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came
together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe.
But now, something has gone wrong – the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race
against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide Geostorm wipes out everything and
everyone along with it. It is quite a good symbolism actually, that the threat in this movie is a human
intervention after all. This is why we should not always blame the system of technologies, but the
humans who abused the power of it.
Geostorm is quite underrated in my opinion. While it’s true that the film is not very
groundbreaking or outstanding to its simple execution, it can’t be denied that the film packs a solid
punch with its action sequences, plot twists and visual effects. Even though I didn’t want to compare it
to other movies of this kind I have seen, such comparisons were inevitable. But trust me, Geostorm is an
entertaining disaster film. Editing is good as the film has been cut at a decent duration and holds your
attention for the most part. Cinematography is impressive and the actors’ performances are quite good.

Synopsis on the different locations in the movie:


The different locations that had been affected by the disasters in the movie possess some similar
weather conditions. Rio de Janeiro’s temperature stays fairly warm all year round and because the
country is in the southern hemisphere, summer falls between December and January while winter runs
from June through August. Hong Kong’s climate is sub-tropical, tending towards temperate for nearly
half of the year. There are mild, relatively dry winters and hot, humid, and wet summers. Afghanistan
has clearly defined seasons; summers are hot and winters can be bitterly cold. In other words, all of
these places have extreme weather conditions. They can either be extremely hot or extremely cold.

Is the movie realistic?


The movie is very unrealistic. The chance of these natural disasters to happen is very minimal
due. Alan Robock, a professor of environmental sciences at Rutgers, agrees that we don’t have to worry
about real life Geostorm anytime soon. He emphasized that it is pure fiction. The multiple tornadoes and
huge wall of water from the ocean are impossible, given his understanding of climate physics.
Impacts when people try to manipulate the energy source of the Earth
If ever people try to manipulate the energy source of the Earth, instead of creating a solution to
the problem, we humans will be the problem. We are altering our planet too much that we could
experience the worst situations possible if we continue to disrupt every natural event we encounter in
our home. Technology us not the problem, we are the problem, and we are the only ones who can
address it. Manipulating the energy source of the Earth is not a solution.
Possibility to weaponize extreme weather events
Putting aside the conflation of weather and climate, the idea of humanity deliberately altering the
climate to create more favorable conditions does have a basis in reality through a burgeoning science
called geoengineering. Robock wrote that “If the technology is ever developed, it could be used for
nefarious purposes, and there is a long history of attempts to control weather for military purposes.”

Life on earth if people can manipulate weather and climate


I believe that the life on earth will be filled with terror and fear. Though manipulating weather
can be advantageous to us if it helps in preventing extreme disasters, it might be used for damaging and
destructive purposes especially during wars. Evil is now prevalent, and for me, it is better to follow the
natural events in our planet and unite all our minds and heart to minimize the danger that we will
experience.
