This document appears to be an exam for a bridge design course, consisting of 5 questions. Question 1 asks students to design the intermediate girder and deck slab of a T-beam bridge given span lengths, road width, slab thickness, loading type, and reinforcement details. Question 2 asks about the Hendry Jaeger method for designing pier caps or proving a cost optimization statement for span arrangements. Question 3 asks about design steps for a balanced cantilever bridge or designing/detailing an open foundation. Question 4 asks about designing a deck slab given span/spacing details or listing forces on a well foundation and seismic design provisions. Question 5 asks about prestressed bridge design principles or continuous bridge design steps and load testing.

ME - SEMESTER–IV (NEW)EXAMINATION – WINTER 2018
Subject Code:2742002 Date:20-Nov-2018
Subject Name: Design of Bridges
Time:02:30 PM To 05:00 PMTotal Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. IRC 5, 6, 78, 112-2011 and Pigeaud’s curve are permitted.
5. Adopt M30 grade of concrete and Fe500 grade of steel, until otherwise specified.
6. Draw neat and clean figures with pencils only.
Q.1 Design the intermediate girder only of RCC T beam and deck slab bridge for 14
the following data:
Effective span of girders: 18 m and Clear width of road way : 8.0 m
Assume suitable spacing so that there should be 3 main girders.
Thickness of deck slab and wearing coat: 220 mm and 80 mm. Type of loading:
IRC 70R – Tracked Vehicle
Kerb size: 600 x 280 mm. Use 36 mm diameter bar for main reinforcement and
10 mm diameter bar for stirrups. Use impact factor as per IRC, also use
Courbon’s method for the distribution of live load.
Q.2 (a) Explain the “Hendry Jaeger Method”. 07
(b) Enlist the design steps of the pier cap. 07
OR
(b) Prove that cost of bridge will be minimum when the spans are so arranged that 07
the cost of one pier is equal to the cost of the girder of one span.
Q.3 (a) Elaborate the design steps of balanced cantilever bridge. 07
(b) Draw the neatly the diagram of IRC AA Wheel load vehicle. 07
OR
Q.3 Design and detail open foundation for a wall type pier for following data. Cross 14
section 2.2 m x 3.75 m, Axial load = 1800 kN, Longitudinal moment = 180
kN.m, Transverse moment = 140 kN. Consider 3.0 m as depth of foundation.
Q.4 Design the slabonly of RCC T beam and deck slab bridge for the following 14
data:
Effective span of girders: 20 m and Clear width of road way : 7.5 m
Spacing of cross girder and main girder: 4.0 m and 2.5 m c/c
Type of loading: IRC AA – Tracked Vehicle
OR
Q.4 (a) Enlist the forces acting on the well foundation and draw typical cross section 07
detail of well foundation.
(b) Explain the seismic resistant design provisions for the bridges. 07
Q.5 (a) Explain the design principle of Prestressed Bridges. 07
(b) Explain the use of Pigeaud’s curve 07
OR
Q.5 (a) Enlist the design steps of continuous bridge. 07
(b) Explain the load test on the bridge will be performed. 07
