Video Lesson

This lesson plan aims to teach first grade students about the seasons of the year using technology. The teacher will begin with an introduction on seasons, then show a video they created in iMovie to illustrate the seasons and engage students visually and auditorily. Students will then participate in a matching activity to reinforce concepts. As an extension, students will create their own seasonal tree to express what they learned creatively. The use of iMovie is central to providing engaging content delivery. Student understanding will be assessed through observation of the matching activity.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students hopefully will be engaged by the opening video. It will have fun music, and colors.
Additionally, students may be engaged by the open creativeness the post lesson project allows for.
Representation: The video will have colors, music, words, and pictures to engage all types of learners
(auditory and visual). Tactile learners may learn more from the hands-on tree project, or matching game.
Action and Expression: Students will have the ability to express themselves through the post-lesson project.
They will be given a blank tree and they will create their own season however they see fit. They are
encouraged to use a variety of colors and shapes.
Lesson idea implementation: I will begin the lesson with a mind capture on seasons of the year. Then,
students will watch the video I created on the seasons of the year. Following the video, we will begin an
activity on the seasons that involves matching pictures and using adjectives to describe the seasons, and what
happens in each season. The whole lesson will take 40 minutes. Student learning be assessed through
observation. I will watch how each student and asses based on how accurately they complete their matching
activity.
To extend this lesson to a higher learning level, I’ll have them create their own tree and decorate it based on
whichever season they choose. I will conclude the lesson by complimenting everyone’s beautiful work and
asking if anyone has any questions. I will then take up everyone’s projects and hang them around the room.
Importance of technology: This project could not be completed without the use of iMovie because that is
how I’m creating my video which is the main content part of the lesson. Without iMovie, I wouldn’t be able to
have a fun, engaging body for my lesson.
Inspiration (optional): n/a

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: I am not planning on using my students’ names, faces, other any other
personal information on my video. Additionally, I am not posting their work anywhere online therefore, there
aren’t any internet privacy concerns with this specific lesson idea.

Reflective Practice: I feel like students will have a clearer understating of the different seasons, and how to
describe them after this lesson. To further extend this lesson, we could go deeper into science and the
seasons, such as how the changing season affect and impact both humans and animals. I could use my
classroom blog to upload the students’ season trees for parents to see and enjoy.
