Assignment II Feb 2019

This document contains 10 questions related to water resources engineering assignments on topics like unit hydrograph analysis, runoff calculation, and flood hydrograph determination. The questions provide rainfall and discharge data and ask students to calculate runoff, determine catchment characteristics, and estimate hydrograph ordinates. Parameters include phi index, average runoff, depth of runoff, base flow, total runoff, watershed area, and unit hydrograph ordinates. Students are asked to perform hydrologic analyses and calculations to solve problems involving rainfall-runoff relationships.

Assignment II

1. Rainfall depths measured at 20 minute intervals of a storm are 3, 10, 15, 10, 10, 8 and 4 mm.
Determine the Ø-index if the resulting runoff is 28 mm. If a rainfall of 25 mm occurs for one
hour in this catchment, what is the runoff?

2. A 6-hr rainfall event delivers 2.0, 4.5, 4.8, 3.2, 2.2 and 1.6 cm of rainfall on a catchment. The
Ø-index of the catchment area are 25 mm/hr for the first 30% of the area, 30 mm/hr for
another 30% and 20 mm/hr for the rest of the area. Estimate the average runoff from the
catchment

3. The values of discharge in a stream measured at 6 hr interval are given below. The base flow
may be assumed to increase linearly from 10 m3/sec to 80 m3/sec during the storm flow
duration. Determine the depth of runoff, base flow and total runoff if the catchment area of
the stream up to the gauge point is 200 km2.
Time from start

4. The design storm of a watershed has a depth of 4.9 cm for a one hour period. The 1-hr UH
can be approximated by a triangle of base 6 hr with a peak of 50 cumecs occurring after 2 hrs
from the start of the storm. What is the area of the watershed which generated tis UH? If the
average loss is 9 mm/hr and a constant base flow of 10 cumecs exists in the basin, compute
the ordinates of the flood hydrograph

5. The storm runoff due to a 3.8 cm storm of 3 hr at 3 hr intervals are 10, 110, 210, 400, 440,
240, 175, 152, 144 and 100 m3/sec. Assuming initial losses as 8 mm/hr and a linearly
increasing base flow from 10 m3/sec to 100 m3/sec, determine the ordinates of a 3 hr Unit
Hydrograph Also determine the area of the catchment which generates this runoff.

6. Rainfall depths measured at 30 minute intervals of a storm are 3, 10, 15, 10, 10, 8 and 4 mm.
Determine the Ø-index if the resulting runoff is 35 mm. If a rainfall of 30 mm occurs for one
hour in this catchment, what is the runoff?

Ø-index of the catchment area are 30 mm/hr for the first 30% of the area, 35 mm/hr for
another 30% and 25 mm/hr for the rest of the area. Estimate the average runoff from the
catchment

8. The values of discharge in a stream measured at 6 hr interval are given below. The base flow
may be assumed to increase linearly from 10 m3/sec to 80 m3/sec during the storm flow
duration. Determine the depth of runoff, base flow and total runoff if the catchment area of
the stream up to the gauge point is 250 km2.

9. The design storm of a watershed has a depth of 5.8 cm for a one hour period. The 1-hr UH
can be approximated by a triangle of base 6 hr with a peak of 60 cumecs occurring after 2 hrs
from the start of the storm. What is the area of the watershed which generated tis UH? If the
average loss is 8 mm/hr and a constant base flow of 10 cumecs exists in the basin, compute
the ordinates of the flood hydrograph

10. The storm runoff due to a 3.6 cm storm of 3 hr at 3 hr intervals are 10, 107, 213, 382, 410,
225, 175, 158, 135 and 100 m3/sec. Assuming initial losses as 6 mm/hr and a linearly
increasing base flow from 10 m3/sec to 100 m3/sec, determine the ordinates of a 3 hr Unit
Hydrograph. Also determine the area of the catchment which generates this runoff
