CODEWEST API-570 COURSE - ASME B16.5, COPYRIGHT © 2008 ~ JW. COLEY, J. W. STOKES AND CODEWEST - DO NOT COPY OR DISTRIBUTE WITHOUT PERMISSION ASME B16.5-2003 Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings NPS % Through NPS 24 1 Scope 44 General This standard covers pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking, testing, and methods of designating openings for pipe flanges and flanged fittings in sizes NPS % through NPS 24 and in rating Classes 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2600. 1.2 References Standards.and specifications adopted by reference in this standard are shown in Annex H. 2 Pressure-Temperature Ratings 2.2 Flanged Joints ‘A flanged joint is composed of three separate and independent, although interrelated ‘components: the flanges, the gasket, and the bolting, which are assembled by yet another influence, the assembler. 2.3.2. Mixed Flanged Joints Ifthe two flanges in a flanged joint do not have the same pressure-temperature ratings, the rating of the joint at any ternperature is the lower of the two flange ratings at that temperature. 2.4 Rating Temperature For any temperature below — 20°F, the rating shall not be greater than the rating shown for — 20°F. 2.5.2 High Temperature A temperatures above 400°Ffor Class 150 and above 750°F for other class designations, flanged joints may develop leakage unless care is taken to avoid imposing severe external loads and/or severe thermal gradients. Or both, 2.6 System Hydrostatic Test Flanged joints and flanged fittings may be subjected to system hydrostatic tests at a pressure not to exceed 1.5 times the 100°F rating rounded off to the next higher 26 psi, 3 Component Size 3.4 Nominal Size The size of the flange or flanged fitting covered by this standard is its nominal pipe size, NPS. Use of ‘nominal’ indicates that the stated size or dimension is only for designation, not measurement. COPYRIGHT © 2008 - J. W. COLEY, J. W. Reducing flanges and reducing flanged fitings shall be marked with the applicable NPS designations as required by paras. 3.2 and 3.3. 427 Ring Joint Flange ‘The edge (periphery) of each ring joint flange shall be marked with the letter R and the corresponding ring groove number. 5 Materials 51 General P Flanges and flanged fittings covered by this Standard shall be castings, forgings, and (for blind flanges only) late as listed in Table 1A. 5.1.1 Application Criteria for the selection of materials are not within the scope of this Standard COPYRIGHT © 2008 ~ J.
