Getting Started with the Firmware Upgrade Wizard

Requirements
The firmware upgrade wizard for the PanelView Plus and VersaView CE requires
the following software to be properly installed on the computer performing the
firmware upgrade:
? RSView Studio v3.10
? RSLinx Enterprise
? Firmware Upgrade Wizard from Firmware Upgrade Media Kit.

Preparing the Terminal


Before starting the Firmware Upgrade Wizard, please prepare the terminal for the
firmware upgrade to ensure proper installation by following these steps:
1. Backup all .MER files on the terminal to an external storage card or
network.
2. Delete all applications on the terminal.
3. Record any Ethernet communication settings, such as IP address, subnet
masks, and gate ways by selecting Terminal Settings->Network and
Communications->Network Connections->Network Adaptors->IP Address.
4. Disable the Auto-Start feature on the terminal by selecting
Startup Options->RSView ME Station Startup and select “Go to
configuration mode”.
5. Reset the terminal.

Installing the Firmware Upgrade Wizard on a PC


After installing RSView Studio 3.10 and RSLinx Enterprise, install the Firmware
Upgrade Wizard from the Firmware Upgrade Media or Advanced Media Kit CD
by following these instructions:

1. Copy the files on the CD to the same drive that RSView Studio is installed on,
such as C:\FUW.
2. Locate the file “Install.bat”, which was copied to the same drive as RSView
Studio (such as C:\FUW), and double click on it.

3. A command prompt window and self extracting ZIP utility will appear. Select
the root directory of the drive that RSView Studio is installed on (such as C:\).
Press “Unzip” to unzip the files.

Important: The files must be unzipped in the root directory (such as C:\) of
the drive that RSView Studio was installed in order for the
Firmware Upgrade Wizard to install properly.

4. The files will unzip into the appropriate directories. When finished, select
“OK” and press “Close”

5. The command prompt window will register the appropriate files and close
automatically.
Running the Firmware Upgrade Wizard
To start the firmware upgrade wizard, Select Start->Rockwell Software->RSView
Enterprise->Tools->Firmware Upgrade Wizard.

Upgrading via a Compact Flash Card


To upgrade a PanelView Plus or VersaView CE terminal using a compact flash
card, follow the steps below:

1. Select “Create firmware upgrade card”. Next, select the destination for the
compact flash files. This could be in a directory on the hard drive or the physical
location of the compact flash card (such as Drive E:\). Finally, select the existing
terminal type, and select “Next”.

2. Select the source folder C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSView


Enterprise\FUPs for the firmware files, select the version of firmware you would
like to upgrade to, and select “Next”.
3. Select the appropriate KEPServer drivers, and select “Next”. If no KEPSever
drivers are needed, simply select “Next”.

4. Select “Finish” to create the files in the location selected in step #1.

5. If the files were created in a separate directory on a local hard drive, copy the
files to the root directory of the compact flash card.
6. Insert the compact flash card into the external slot of the terminal’s Logic
Module. A dialog box will appear indicating that a firmware upgrade is about to
occur. One can either select OK, or Exit.

7. Press “OK” to begin the firmware upgrade process. DO NOT PULL THE
COMPACT FLASH CARD until instructed to do so.

8. If other PanelView Plus / VersaView CE Terminals exist on the same Ethernet


network, an error message may show up when upgrading stating,
“Error registering name on network (may be duplicate). Change in system
Control Panel and try again.”
Ignore this message, for this error will be corrected automatically during the
upgrade process. Patiently wait until the upgrade is complete and the terminal
resets itself.

Note: If a USB Mouse is available one can acknowledge this error by


pressing “OK”.

9. On touch or combo terminals, you will need to recalibrate the touch screen by
selecting the pointers in all four corners of the touch screen, and press the
middle of the screen when prompted.

10. If the error message “Machine edition may be corrupted. Do you want to
download firmware?” with two buttons appears, please disregard this message;
for RSView ME is currently being installed.

11. After the terminal has been upgraded, a dialog box will appear requesting
the removal the compact flash card. Remove the Compact Flash card, and press
F8 or “Exit”. The terminal will reboot.

12. If Ethernet communications is being used, reconfigure the Ethernet


communication settings using the values recorded when preparing the terminal.
All communication settings are cleared when the terminal is upgraded

13. Replace the MER files copied from preparing the terminal or download the
new MER files to the terminal..

14. Load the MER file and run the project.

Note: You can set your application to start up automatically on Power


cycle by setting the options listed in section “Preparing the Terminal” step
#4.

15. For VersaView CE, load any other files or viewers from the VersaView CE
Accessories CD.
Upgrading via Ethernet Communications
To upgrade a PanelView Plus or VersaView CE terminal using Ethernet
Communications, follow the steps below:

1. Select “Upgrade firmware on terminal”, and select “Next”.

2. Select “Network connection”, and select “Next”. The Ethernet and Serial
connections are to be used only when the firmware upgrade is not successful.
3. Locate the PanelView Plus / VersaView CE on your Ethernet network via it’s
IP address. Skip to step 5 if you found your terminal. Otherwise if you do not
see your terminal you can right click on the Ethernet driver, and add the device to
the browse tree.

4. Double click on EtherNetIP Devices, select the appropriate terminal, and


select “OK”.
4. Enter the appropriate IP address for the terminal, and select “OK”.

5. Highlight the terminal to be upgraded, and select “OK”.

6. Select the source folder C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSView


Enterprise\FUPs for the firmware files, select the version of firmware you would
like to upgrade to, and select “Next”.
7. Select the appropriate KEPServer drivers, and select “Next”. If no KEPSever
drivers are needed, simply select “Next”.

8. Select “Finish” to begin download the files for the firmware upgrade.
9. Press “Yes” if you wish to continue the upgrade process. There should be no
applications running on the terminal if the terminal was properly prepared for the
firmware upgrade.

10. The files start downloading to the terminal. This will take a few minutes
(updwards of 10 to 15 minutes). When the download is complete, select “OK” to
restart the terminal

11. Note – if other PanelView Plus / VersaView CE Terminals exist on the same
Ethernet network, an error message may show up when upgrading stating,
“Error registering name on network (may be duplicate). Change in system
Control Panel and try again.”
Ignore this message, for this error will be corrected automatically during the
upgrade process. Press “OK” or press the Enter key on the keypad to
acknowledge the error and patiently wait until the terminal resets itself.

Note: If a USB Mouse is available one can acknowledge this error by


pressing “OK”.

13. On touch or combo terminals recalibrate the touch screen by selecting the
pointers in all four corners of the touch screen, and press the middle of the
screen when prompted.
14. If the error message “Machine edition may be corrupted. Do you want to
download firmware?” with two buttons appears, please disregard this message;
for RSView ME is currently being installed.

15. If Ethernet communications is being used, reconfigure the Ethernet


communication settings using the values recorded when preparing the terminal.
All communication settings are cleared when the terminal is upgraded.

16. Replace the MER files copied from preparing the terminal or download the
new MER files to the terminal.

17. Load the MER file and run the project.

Note: You can set your application to start up automatically on Power


cycle by setting the options listed in section “Preparing the Terminal” step
#4.

18. For VersaView CE, load any other files or viewers from the VersaView CE
Accessories CD.
