Song, for voice, clarinet and piano Music by MICHAEL HEAD THE WORLD IS MAD THE DARK TOWER a play by LOUIS MACNEICE ICOZ265 MICHAEL HEAD (born Eastbourne 28.1.1900 - died Cape Town 24.8.1976) MICHAEL HEAD went to the Royal Academy of Music in 1919 as a Costa composition scholar, and achieved early success with his songs, which he sang to his own accompaniment at the many recitals of his own and other works which he gave during a long career as composer, performer and teacher. He was a piano professor at the Royal Academy from 1927 until his retirement in 1975. He travelled extensively throughout the world as an adjudicator of music festivals, and competitions and as an examiner for Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, and it was on one of these tours that he died. He composed about 90 songs and some chamber music which will continue to be sung and played for many years to come, thanks to his exquisite craftsmanship and rare melodic sift. THE DARK TOWER was written by Louis MacNeice in 1946 as a radio play and for its first performance Benjamin Britten wrote the incidental music. The words of “The World is Mad’ were’not intended by the author to be set to music but were suggested to Michael Head by June Emerson after a visit by him to Ampleforth in 1975. At the time of his death he was contemplating the possibility of writing a companion song (again with clarinet) in lighter vein with words by the Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman. ‘The Dark Tower is published in the U.K. by Faber and Faber.
