This document proposes a final year project (FYP) on developing a home energy management system using a bio-inspired meta-heuristic optimization technique called Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO). The objectives are to minimize electricity cost and peak to average ratio while maximizing user comfort. Literature on existing optimization techniques for energy management in smart grids is reviewed. The methodology will involve studying research papers, learning optimization algorithms, and using MATLAB for simulation. The social impacts are expected to include lower electricity costs, reduced environmental impact, and increased user comfort. The proposed start date is September 2017 and expected completion is July 2018.

Summary of Project

Home energy management system using bio-inspired meta-heuristic Gray wolf optimization (GWO)
technique.

Introduction

Smart grid is the integration of advanced information, communication and networking

technologies in traditional electric grid to make it smarter and faster in making decisions. This
integration will bring more automation, reliability of electrical services, safety of electrical
equipment and hence an increase in consumer comfort level. With the advent of smart grid several
emerging techniques and technologies have been proposed in past decade by researchers across the
globe.
Smart grid has applications in generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption of
electrical energy. Smart grid technology enables distributed power generation, where power
can be generated locally, use the required power and sale extra power back to utility.
In [1] a power quality monitoring strategy has been enabled by using sensor networks in smart grid.
Smart grid can also enhance the electricity usage efficiency. Consuming electrical energy efficiently
has proved to be beneficial both economically and socially. By employing home energy management
systems, a consumer can reduce his energy bill, reduce peak demand and hence contributes less
towards environmental pollution.
The demand curve in traditional power grid and flat pricing rates scenario shows that load demand
is very high during peak periods as compared to off-peak periods. The result is that utility companies
bring their dirty energy plants online which results in higher generation costs and emission of green
house gases (GHG).The originally inelastic demand curve needs to be changed to reduce energy cost
and peak load demand. Home energy management (HEM) systems in smart grid enable Demand
Side Management (DSM) and Demand Response (DR) programs.
By adapting DSM strategies users are encouraged to shift their load from on peak hours to off peak
hours [2]. Many DSM techniques have been proposed in recent years to achieve above said
objectives. In [3] [4] [5] [6], non integer linear programming, mixed integer non linear programming,
mixed integer linear programming and convex programming are used to minimize the cost and
energy consumption. However these techniques can not be able to handle large number of
appliances. To overcome the deficiencies of above mentioned techniques different bio-inspired
meta-heuristic optimization techniques can also used for energy management in Smart Grid (SG).
Literature Review

In previous years number of optimization techniques are proposed to make remarkable

improvement in SG. Cost minimization and load optimization are always the main concern to
achieve an optimal solution. In this section existing literature on different optimization techniques
are presented.
In [7], authors present an efficient demand side management model for residential area. Objectives
of this study are to minimize electricity cost, peak to average ratio, execution time and maximize
user comfort. Authors evaluate their objectives by using three optimization techniques: genetic
algorithm (GA), binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) and Ant colony optimization (ACO).
Results show that their proposed model works efficiently with GA as compared to ACO and BPSO
in terms of cost and PAR reduction.
Heuristic based evolutionary algorithm is used in [8], for solving optimization problem. Objectives
achieved in this study are minimization of electricity cost and PAR.
In [9] a multi objective evolutionary algorithm is implemented. The aim of this paper is to use
maximum energy efficiently by paying less cost.
