Classroom Blog Lesson Idea Template

This document proposes using a blog creation tool to have students in grades 6-12 track their exercise and physical activity over one month. Students would blog daily about their experiences and assess their progress towards meeting health standards. Creating the blog addresses technology standards about choosing appropriate tools. The blog allows students to demonstrate their knowledge about achieving a healthy level of physical fitness in a creative way at Bloom's Creating level. Using a blog promotes universal design learning principles. Potential issues around internet safety and privacy are addressed.

Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Exercise Journal

Content Area: Healthy Behaviors

Grade Level(s): 6-12
Content Standard Addressed:
Standard 3: The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve
and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
Technology Standard Addressed:
Standard 6a: Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired
objectives of their creation or communication.

Selected Technology Tool:

X Blog ☐ Twitter (Live TwitterChat) ☐ Other: Website Creation Tool (e.g., Wix,
Weebly):

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating X Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration X Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): In order to address Universal Design for Learning principles
to extend and support the learning experiences for all students, I would allow students to be
creative in their blog designing process; according to their strengths or preferences, they can blog
by writing, posting images with captions, taking video blogs (vlogs) etc. However, to be most
inclusive, it is imperative to have closed captions for videos and audio recordings for visuals.

Lesson idea implementation: As I address the standards, the students will blog their experiences
over the period of a month and record how often they participate in physical activity and exercise.
It will take 10-15 minutes to complete daily. Student learning will be assessed throughout the
lesson and by the end product, which is their website/blog and quality of content. The final
product can be used to inform/differentiate learning.
I will extend the student learning to a higher learning level by changing the criteria to a more
advanced content area to film or require research on the content prior to creating a video. To
change it up, I could have students record their nutritional intake daily, or caloric exertion. I will
conclude the lesson by allowing the students who want to show their blog (previewed by the
teacher), show them in class. I will provide feedback to students about their work online wherever
it is that I require them to submit this assignment.

Importance of technology: Using a blog creation tool is critical to the project because it creates a
catalog of what the exercise looks like for an individual, which is important especially if the viewer
has no reference or previous knowledge of the exercise. The project could be completed without
this technology by simply participating in the exercise, however, there would be no creation of a
blog and therefore the project would lose its integrity. If technology was truly unavailable, this
could be recorded in a paper journal.

Inspiration (optional): NA

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Some possible issues surrounding Internet safety and student
privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience include uploading the video to
a public place where anyone could view/comment. I would minimize risks to students/yourself by
only allowing students to upload videos to a secure site. I would alleviate any fears by parents/
administrators by assuring them of my precautions and I would follow common Internet Safety/
Acceptable Use Policies.
Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I feel the activities that I created could
impact student learning in a positive way by fusing both fitness and technology. I have designed
this idea as an introductory activity to a unit of study. With that in mind, I could continue assigning
video creation of different exercises and levels of fitness to further extend the lesson.
