classroom. The unit encompasses many different activities that engage students with the
themes and essential questions of the unit. The unit begins with the conventions of a drama.
Students will also read Aristotle’s The Poetics to learn the common literary tropes of a drama.
Following this activity, students will take notes on a PowerPoint of William Shakespeare’s
background before reading Hamlet. Students will learn background information surrounding
the Globe Theatre, the Blackfriars, and The Royal Shakespeare Company in order to better
their understanding of the unit. Students will also complete a Critical Lens Analysis, where
they will be assigned a lens such as historical, feminism, moral, and others and must analyze
passages through their given lens. Students will participate in a group project where they will
apply their knowledge of the characters and plot, creating a Facebook profile page for their
assigned character from the drama. This will allow students to show their comprehension of
the text in a creative way. The unit will culminate with an argumentative essay in which
students will take a stance one of the essential questions of the unit, and support their claims
with textual evidence. The unit also includes two exams, an anticipation guide, and clips of
the movies The Lion King and Ethan Hawke’s Hamlet.
