Beyond The Basics Lesson

This lesson plan teaches 4th grade students about the solar system through a mind mapping activity using Bubbl.Us. Students will research each planet's attributes like distance from the sun and temperature. With partners, they will create a mind map documenting each planet's description and order from the sun. They will present their mind maps and have the option to write stories, brochures, or songs about the planets. The lesson aims to engage students visually through mind mapping and allow choice in the presentation format. It integrates technology at the exploration level and represents information graphically to benefit visual learners.

Lesson Idea Name: All About the Solar System

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th Grade

Content Standard Addressed:

S4E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the physical attributes of
stars and planets.

Technology Standard Addressed: 4- Innovative Designer

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: This lesson utilizes voice and choice because it allows for students to choose important
information about the planets in the solar system and select a picture that they choose as a representation
of that planet. It also develops the students reflection skills because students will present their Bubbl.Us to
the class and the teacher can point out strengths and weaknesses that can aid the students on completion
of any future assignments that utilize this mind map.

Representation: The Bubbl.Us tool in this lesson offers an alternative for visual learners because the mind
map provides graphical representation to aid students in structuring and organizing the information on
each planet. The web-like display allows sequential details to be added and each bubble can be color coded
with corresponding bubbles to match.

Action and Expression: Students show their knowledge of the topic by organizing their ideas and research.
They can add pictures and audio to each bubble and go into as much depth of the topic as necessary by
adding more and more bubbles to each subtopic.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will begin the study on the planets. During this lesson, the students will learn about the total
number of planets and their distinguishing attributes and characteristics. Students will also include
information about the planets distance from the sun and how that effects their temperature and properties.

With a partner, students will research the planets and find a picture of each planet. They will document their
finding of the planet description and determine its order/placement from the sun. Students will use this mind
map collectively to aid them an assignment of their choice: writing a fictional story about the planets, to

create a travel brochure to their favorite planet, or creating and original song to the tune of a current song
that they like.

Reflective Practice:
Extending this project might involve publishing their work on the schools website or on the classroom
Edublog page for parents to see. Each presentation can be submitted and voted on by the students, staff,
PTA, and parents. The top 3 will be submitted to Nasa.gov to see if they will share the winners via their official
website and/or social media.
