This study investigated the gut and hepatic first-pass effect of verapamil, a calcium channel blocker, in ported dogs. The researchers administered verapamil orally and through the portal vein to measure its absorption and metabolism in the gut and liver. They found that verapamil underwent significant first-pass metabolism in both the gut and liver, with the liver playing a more dominant role in its first-pass elimination than the gut.
