SCSI2143: Probability and Statistical Data Analysis

[2018/2019 - Semester 2]

PROJECT – DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

Data Collection and Data Presentation

In this project, you are required to work individually. The aim of this project is to give you
experience in the data analysis process. You should conduct some steps in the data analysis process
which are:

1. Define the problem/subject of interest.


2. Decide what are the variables to be measured and how to measure the variables.
3. Conduct data collection through any of your preferred method: observation, survey
(questionnaire/interviews).
4. Summarized data using graphical/tabular/parametric description and perform preliminary
analysis.
5. Discuss your findings based on the data summarization and preliminary analysis.

Important:

• Please make sure data collected consists of both qualitative (Example: gender, race,
nationality) and quantitative (Example: hours of study, money spent, height, no. of household)
• The sample size should be not less than 30.
• If you decide to use secondary data, make sure you understand the purpose of the data collected
and how the data was collected.
• You could use any suitable software for descriptive data analysis, for example: Microsoft
Excel, SPSS, SAS, R, Python.

Report Writing
You are required to write a report which consists of the following information:

1) Introduction or background

• Explain the purpose of the study in your own words, why you were interested in the question
and what you expect to see from the data.
• Describe what are the variables to be measured and how you measure the variables of
interest.

2) Data Collection Method

• Explain population of interest and how you choose the samples to represent the population.
• Explain how the data was collected and provide attachment of your questionnaire/interview
questions/observation record.
3) Data Presentation and Description

Present your data using any graphical/tabular/parametric description interestingly and explain
about the findings.

Example topics to study on:

1) Volume of People Entering and Exiting a Mall and Their Usage of the Automatic versus
Manual Door.

2) Student Spending Per Order in a Fast Food Restaurant.

3) Drivers Attitude toward Stop Sign or zebra crossing

4) UTM students view on the programs shown in a local TV station.

5) Student preference and attitude toward computer games and social network.

6) Understanding smart phone usage among primary school students.

7) A Study on the Perspective of Students toward Learning Foreign Languages.

Or any other subjects that related to your daily activities or observation.

Submission: 4th May 2019 (hardcopy).
