Performance Assessment 3 Outline


I.Introduction
A. Hook

B. The Red Badge of Courage

C. “The Red Badge of Courage” is a novel that happened during the American Civil

War in 1861. It is about a soldier named Henry Fleming who fought in the war for

the first time. He narrated his experiences in the novel.

D. Stephen Crane

E. The fact the novel is an example of the Realism period.

F. Realism is the area which represent a faithful representation of reality in literature,

emphasized on the development of believable characters and written in common

language or dialect.

G. Time span of that literary period is 1865 – 1890.

H. The importance of courage is the major theme in the novel “The Red Badge of

Courage”. Imagery, dialogue and irony are used to convey the theme.

II. Five main events:

A. Henry Fleming is a soldier who fought in the war for the first time.

B. Henry believes that war exists for the purpose of chatting heroes

C. Henry doesn’t feel regret nor shame and he allows esteem of others.

D. Henry Fleming has to comrades and he rejects the soldiers.

E. Henry Fleming is a soldier who went through Civil War and he was a soldier.

III. Imagery is the literary element used to convey the theme of courage.
A. “ The youth of this tale felt gratitude for these words of his comrade. He had feared

that all of the united men possessed great and correct confidence. He now was in a

measure reassured” (Crane 73)

B. “ There was a consciousness always of the presence of his comrades about him. He

felt the subtle battle brotherhood more potent even than the cause for which they were

fighting. It was a mysterious fraternity born of the smoke and danger of death” (Crane

12).

IV. Dialogue is the literary element used by the author to expressed the theme of courage.
A. “There was a consciousness always of the presence of his comrades about him. He felt

B. “At times he regarded the wounded soldiers in an envious way. He conceived persons

with torn bodies to be peculiarly happy. He wished that he, too, had a wound, a red badge

of courage” (Crane 9).

V. Characterization is the the literary element used by the author to expressed the theme of
courage.
A.“He felt the subtle battle brotherhood more potent even than the cause for which they
were fighting.” (Crane )
B. “It's a temporary but sublime absence of selfishes”(Crane 19).
VI. Conclusion
A. The novel “ The Red Badge of Courage” became famous because Stephen Crane narrated
the true story and experiences of the soldiers who fought during the Civil War
B. Crane’s values is shown in the events that happened during the war.He wrote the truth of
the sufferings of the soldiers in the battle field.

C. The part when Henry was with the 304th regiment and won the war. He was awarded
with The Red Badge which is proof that he is a red soldier.
