Phased Array Calculations With Answers

1) Parameters like frequency, aperture size, element size, and pitch affect the probe's focusing ability, beam width, steering angle, and other properties. 2) Calculations are provided to determine the maximum focal distance, beam width at the focal point, beam divergence, beam size at a given depth, and maximum steering angle for various probe configurations. 3) Examples are given to calculate these metrics for probes with different aperture sizes, frequencies, and focal distances to illustrate how the parameters impact performance.

Probe Parameters

 Frequency (f), wavelength ()

 Total number of elements in array (n)
 Total aperture in steering direction (A)
 Height, aperture in passive direction (H)
 Width of an individual element (e)
 Pitch, centre to centre distance between two successive elements
(p)
 Gap between adjacent elements, (g)
Limit of Focusing

Limited to the Extent of the Near Field

 A = Aperture of the array

  = Wavelength

  = Velocity of the test item

 Frequency of the transducer

Example

A =32mm

Velocity = 5900m/s

A = 32mm

Frequency = 5MHz

So:  = 5900m/s = 1.18mm therefore 32²

5000KHz 4

Limit of Focusing = 216mm
