STUDENT TEACHING EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE (STEP)

STANDARD 1, PART I

Student Teaching Evaluation of Performance (STEP) is the process for preparing and implementing a unit of instruction.

By understanding the community and school environment and the makeup of the classroom, you will be able to strategically meet the overall needs of your
students. In the first two weeks of student teaching, you should focus on learning about the students you will be working with. You are expected to teach the
unit you are preparing by the end of week 8.

Review the geographic, district, and school demographics of your student teaching classroom. Utilize the district or school website, your cooperating
teacher/mentor, or school administrator for this information. You may also use your state Department of Education website for statistical data on community
and school demographics.

With the support of the community, we could see high levels of consistency in the purpose behind planning, the ability to deliver instructions to our students, and the purpose
and effect on assessments. When schools are supported by the people in the community, the community is important in providing schools with resources that will support
students in their learning, which those resources may be free or donated to the schools to save the schools money. One huge support that we have from the community is our
public library which communicates for us when we need materials or information to provide our students when teaching lessons. With the support of the community, this gives
students a chance to be effective members as well and become productive citizens. It is important that the schools get as much support as they can so that everyone works
together and shares ideas to support the needs of all students.

 Describe the district demographic data, including statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it, for your cooperating school
district.
In our school district, we have many low-income families as well as military families. We have many students of different races such as Caucasians, Hispanic, African-American,
and Native American. Even though Caucasians make up for most of our city's population, in our school alone, Hispanics make up the highest background of our students.

With many low-income families, it is difficult to get parent support for school activities especially after school, due to many of the families working late or no transportation.
This does have an affect on student's learning in the classroom as many families do not have adequate transportation and depend on the school bus to bring their kids to
school, which many students miss the bus in the mornings and they end up staying home, because they cannot be brought to school. Also, within our school, we have many
single parent families, which our kids come to school tired an not wanting to focus due to them going to bed whenever they want to.

This is my first year working at this school, which we came into a D school. It is important that everyone in the school works as a team to work hard to build the school grade up.
It is important to have effective communication and build relationships with parents and members of the community to receive the additional support to be where we want to
be. It takes everyone working together to keep a school up and running. When we do not have adequate staffing, it makes planning difficult.
