Lesson Plan Grade 9 Mathematics

This lesson plan is for a 1-hour lesson on inverse variation in grade 9 mathematics. The objective is to solve problems involving inverse variation. The lesson will review what a variation is, identify direct and inverse variations, and motivate the students with a quote about teamwork. Students will work in groups on word problems involving inverse variations and analyze the problems. They will then learn how to solve inverse variation problems. To evaluate their understanding, students will solve sample problems independently. For homework, students must solve and show the work for a word problem about the time to fill a tank varying inversely with the number of people filling it.

Lesson Title: Inverse Variation Time Frame: 1 hour

Prepared by: Patrick Cañete

Lesson Plan in Grade 9 Mathematics

I. Objective
 Solve problems involving inverse variation.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Inverse Variation
B. Reference: Intermediate Algebra, pp. 183-189
C. Materials: manila paper, marker, activity cards
D. Value Focus: Cooperation

III. Procedure
A. Pre-Activity
1. Opening Prayer and Attendance
2. Review
What is a variation?

3. Drill
Identify whether direct variation or direct power variation.

1) y=kx2 4) d=kt2
2) y=kx 5) A=kr2
3) w=kz 6) s=kr

4. Motivation
What kind of variation is this, “Alone we can do so little; together we
can do so much.”?

B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
Divide the class in three groups.

Group I.

If Ana can water the garden for 50 mins., how long would it
take if Sara helps her water the same garden?

Group II.

In a candy factory, 50 people can produce a ton of candy in

2 days. How long would it take for 100 people to do the same
work?

Group III.
If 10 people can finish cleaning a house in 2 days, how long
would it take if 20 people do the same job?
2. Analysis
a. What is asked in the problem?
b. What are the given?
c. What is the mathematical statement?
d. What is the answer?

3. Abstraction
How are we going to solve problems involving inverse variation?

4. Application

Solve:

1. y varies inversely as x, and y=81 when x=0.9, find y when

x=18.

2. If 15 carpenters can build a house in 48 hours, how long can

25 carpenters finish the same job?

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Solve the following problems.

If y varies inversely as x;

1) y=18 when x=10; y=_____ when x=12

2) y=10 when x=5; y=_____ when x= 10
3) y=12.5 when x=8.5; y=_____ when x=2
4) y=20 when x=50; y=_____ when x=25
5) y=100 when x=60; y= 20 when x=_____

V. Assignment

Direction: Solve and show your solution.

The time to fill a large tank varies inversely as the number of people filling
the tank. If 30 people can fill the tank in 3 hours, how long would it take for 10
people to do it?
