Address human interface consideration

Review with the customer


For customers, having long endurance mileage is one of the top needs when
choosing a electromobile. The endurance mileage of Model X is 489km[1], which looks
comparable to conventional vehicle. However, this value is gained from a theoretical
test where no extra program was runned, such as audio system, GPS, and heating.
Therefore, we can conclude that the endurance mileage of Model X is still not
competitive for daily use. If we can apply the solar charging system allowing charging
of at least 3.8kw, even if the battery capacity still remains the same, the endurance
mileage will be expanded as users can charge while using.

Review with stakeholders


By adding the solar charging system, most of the extra energy consumptions
would be made up as long as the charging efficiency is high enough. So we could say:
customers’ needs is mostly satisfied. Since there is numerous research outcomes on
solar energy application, the technology is being applied to many places, which
enables us to apply this technology to automobiles. As analyzed, the requirement
states clearly and targets just on customer needs and it is ready to be allocated to
related parts. Considering the advantages that this may bring and also its feasibility,
additional resources could be ready to put in.

The reason why solar charging system is needed

To satisfy customers’ needs of long endurance mileage, there are two options:
store more electrical power, or charge while driving out. To realize the first option, the
solution is to expand the battery capacity. However, if we simply expand the battery
capacity, the charging time would be correspondingly prolonged and will cause new
problem for customers. If we realize the second option by applying solar charging
system, then the extra energy consumption can be made up so that users could have
actual endurance mileage of 489 km per charging or even more.

For stakeholders, applying solar charging system can help to improve the
environment and thus, save government investment. If we focus on local pollution
caused by emission, both expanded battery and solar charging system perform good.
However, using expanded battery will still cause pollutions in the place where the
electrical power is generated, while solar energy does not have this problem.

Decompose the requirements


In this case, the original customer requirement is “having enough energy for
traveling and in-car entertainment after each charging”. We translate it into “increasing
the endurance mileage by charging with solar charging system while driving.” This
requirement can be decomposed as following:
The charging efficiency of the solar charging system shall make up as much energy
consumption rate caused by non-driving functions.
The solar charging system shall perform stable even in bad conditions like raining.
The design of the system shall meet aesthetic and safety requirement.
The solar charging system should fit with the car’s exterior
The solar charging system should not interfere with the operate of existing functions.
The solar charging system should not influence the performance of original designs.
