End of The Year Project Idea
End of The Year Project Idea
Grade level: 9
Curricular Area: Biology 1
-Individual Project
At the end of the year students will each do a research experiment. Students will pick a topic of
their choice. Students will research the topic and create an experiment that pertains to that topic.
For example, if the chosen project is about ocean acidification the student can do an experiment
to figure out what the effects will be on mollusks. The idea of this project is for students to put
together everything they have learned throughout the year. This is includes setting up
experiments, researching scholarly articles, scientific writing, and critical thinking skills.
Requirements:
-Must have a write up of the experiment
-Must include some sort of visual involving the experiment
-Present findings of the experiment to the class
-The timeline of the activity takes place over the last quarter of the school year. First the students
will pick a topic that they find interesting and must submit the idea on a first come first serve
basis within the first two weeks. Students will then do research on the topic in and out of class.
We will discuss what needs to be required in their experiments. After the experiments students
need to write lab report including findings. Then they will create a visual that includes images of
the experimental process. At the end they will do a presentation in front of the class about the
topic, their experiment, the results, and how the results can be used to resolve the issue at hand.
-This engages students by allowing them to use what they have learned throughout the school
year. They can get excited about applying their knowledge to real world problems. They are
empowered to do their own research on a topic of their choice and educate those around them.
This may even spark an interest that they can pursue in the future.
