Abstract
In this paper I will be reviewing a chapter from the book, Education Today: Issues, Policies, &
Practices composed by Beryl Watnick. This book is a compilation of different works on the
many aspects of teaching. I have chosen to focus on the section concerning classroom
environment. In this section there ideas discussed including physical classroom environment as
well as social. It reviews the benefits of what a positive, welcoming classroom can lead to. With
a positive classroom environment we can then focus on the students, and allow students to focus
on their education.
For most people we do well when we are in a comfortable environment. We are able to
put some things into the back of our minds and focus on the task at hand. This is no different for

students in the classroom. When we are able to create a positive and engaging learning
environment we give students the ability to prosper (Watnick, 2018, p.1706). There are some
areas that teachers can focus on to create a great learning environment. One of the is the physical
environment of the classroom. Some of these factors include the layout of desk, lab tables,
whiteboards, lighting, temperature, and others. The way we are able to group students is critical,
especially in today’s teaching which focuses on the students and collaboration (Watnick, 2018,
p.1707). Making sure students are comfortable physically in the classroom can lead to more
productivity. If they know the space that they are working in they can be more efficient with
Another area that needs to be addressed is the classroom climate or atmosphere. This
means creating a space that is bright, welcoming, and positive. Teachers need to create a bright,
welcoming, and encouraging space for students to work. In order to do this teachers need have
clear and fair expectations. It also includes creating a space that judgement free and allows
students to feel safe to branch out and ask questions and to ask for help if needed. Students need
to feel both physically and psychologically safe (Watnick, 2018, p.1709). Teachers need to be
present in the classroom. They need to be able to support the students’ needs in the classroom. If
they can gain the trust of students they can then in turn ask students to be their best. They allow
With all this falling on teachers, student can contribute to the environment that the
teacher has created. We need to be able to allow students to contribute to the classroom
environment. They can do this with the assistance from the teacher. Teachers can work with
students to see what needs they have. When we allow students to express their wants and needs
we can make changes to provide for them. This can only be done though if we allow students a

safe place to work and learn in. When everything is in place we can help students self-efficacy.
When they are self motivated and see their own potential they will contribute more to the
classroom, encouraging a better learning environment (Watnick, 2018, p.1710). Being able to
work with the students greatly increases the ability to achieve a positive classroom environment.
When we build the framework for a positive classroom environment we allow our students to
come in and fill in the spaces. Teachers need to establish all the necessary rules and expectations.
Doing so allows all students to know what they need to get achieved. They then can focus on
what they need to do to meet or exceed these expectations. When we encourage our students we
should be able to see a positive reaction if we have made the students’ feel safe. Overall having a
positive and safe place for students is a critical start. This gives us a base to build on. We can
then focus on how best to help our students and work with them to fulfill their own potentials.
