Math Lesson Plan2

The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching grade 3 students how to use repeated addition to solve multiplication sentences. The lesson will involve using arrays, groups, and PowerPoint slides to model repeated addition and have students practice solving equations. Students will work in pairs and the teacher will assess understanding through observation, questioning, and student presentations.

H00292379 Repeated addition.

Class: Grade 3 Date & Duration: 11 March 2019

Lesson Outcomes
Students will use repeated addition to solve a multiplication sentence.

Links to Prior Learning

 In Grade 1 students used a variety of strategies, including counting on, number facts to 5, and
doubling to 10 to add numbers up to double digits. They also used reversing as a strategy to turn
subtraction problems into addition problems. In Grade 2 students have added to these
strategies and increased the size of the totals that they are making.
 This outcome is about using repeated addition as a way to calculate “how many” for groupings
of numbers other that 2, 5, or 10.
 Teachers encourage students to develop skills in repeated addition by the use of manipulatives
such as – the abacus, strings of beads, hundreds boards and 10s frames.
21st Century Skills
Collaboration and communication: students will work in pairs.

Key vocabulary
 Array.
 Groups.
 Repeated addition.

 Difficulty solving multiplication  Put the multiplication table in the
equation. center of each table in the classroom
to help the students use the draw array.

 Students will have equations, and they should match the two ways of multiplication
sentences with the right equations.
Differentiation activities (Stretch)
 Finish early: the teacher will give the students worksheets that have questions.
