Using Upright and Pedestal Drill To Make Hole of Given Dimensions

The document provides instructions for drilling holes of specific dimensions in mild steel using drill presses. It describes the basic components and types of drill presses, suitable materials for drill bits including various coatings, how to determine cutting speed and feed rate, and safety precautions for drilling operations. The procedure involves marking, grinding, and drilling a mild steel workpiece based on given dimensions using drill bits of different diameters. The conclusion confirms that holes of the required dimensions were successfully drilled.

Using upright and Pedestal drill to make hole of given dimensions

Objective:
To perform drilling on Mild steel work piece according to the given dimensions.

Introduction:
Drilling machine is one of the simplest, moderate and accurate machine tool used in production
shop and tool room. It consist of a spindle which imparts rotary motion to the drilling tool, a
mechanism for feeding the tool into the work, a table on which the work rests. It is considered
as a single purpose machine tool since its chief function is to make holes.

Drill Press:
The standard machine tool for drilling is the drill press. There are various types of drill press, the
most basic of which is the upright drill. The upright drill stands on the floor and consists of a
table for holding the work part, a drilling head with powered spindle for the drill bit, and a base
and column for support. A similar drill press, but smaller, is the bench drill, which is mounted on
a table or bench rather than the floor.

Drilling Bit Material:

Many different materials are used for or on drill bits depending on requirements. Many hard
materials such as carbide are much more brittle than steel. Following is the list of materials used
in drillings;
 Little carbon steel
 high carbon steel
 high speed steel
 cobalt steel alloys
 Tungsten carbide
 Poly crystalline diamond
Coating:
 Black oxide
 Titanium
 Titanium nitride
 Titanium carbon nitride
 Diamond powder

Cutting Speed: The speed of a drill is measured in terms of the rate at which the outside or
periphery of the tool moves in relation to the work being drilled. The common unit and term for
this velocity is surface feet per minute, abbreviated sfm.
V= π × D × N
where V=cutting speed, mm/min (in/min); and D=the drill diameter, mm (in).

Feed: Feed f in drilling is specified in mm/rev (in/rev). Recommended feeds are roughly
proportional to drill diameter; higher feeds are used with larger diameter drills. Since there are
(usually) two cutting edges at the drill point, the uncut chip thickness (chip load) taken by each
cutting edge is half the feed. Feed can be converted to feed rate using the same equation as for
turning
Fr= N×f
where Fr = feed rate, mm/min (in/min)

Equipment and Materials:

REQUIRED MATERIAL:

Mid Steel Flat of 100 x 76 x 16 mm3.

REQUIRED TOOLS:
 Machine vise
 Steel rule
 Dot punch
 Ball peen hammer
 Smooth File
 Drill bits of diameters mm, 12.5 mm & 20 mm
 High Speed Steel tool with Titanium Nitride coating

SEQUENCE OF OPERATIONS:

 Checking the raw material

 Marking and sawing
 Marking on the flat
 Drilling
 Grinding the corners
 Surface grinding

Procedure:
1. The surface of the given work piece is the first smoothened by filing.
2. Then chalk is applied on its surface and marking should be done as per
the required dimensions.
3. Cut the four corners of the work piece by using cold chisel.
4. Grind the four corners of the work piece to the required shape by using
bench grinder.
5. Grind the four sides of the work piece.
6. Drilling operation is performed to make different sizes of holes by using
drilling machine.

NOTE:
 Cutting speed used in this experiment is 100sfm.
 FEED RATE Fr in [in./rev]
1. For dia= 20mm Fr=0.008 to 0.012
2. For dia=12.5mm Fr=0.004 to 0.008
3. For dia= 5mm Fr=0.002 to 0.004

Precautions:
1. Follow the general instructions written in the manual.
2. The work piece should be held rigidly in the chuck before operating the
machine.
3. Tool should be properly ground, fixed at correct height and properly
secured, and work also be firmly secured.
4. Before operating the machine see whether the job and tool is firmly
secured in devices or not.
5. Optimum machining conditions should be maintained.
6. Chips should not be allowed to wound around a revolving job and cleared
as often as possible.
7. Apply cutting fluids to the tool and work piece properly.

CONCUSION: Holes of required dimensions were drilled in the workpiece.

Cost:
RS 350 for obtaining the workpiece of required dimensions.
