Rational: This activity is designed to provide hands-on experiences related to working with
various shapes. Because geometry is by itself developmental, students need to work often with
shapes and explore how the attributes of one shape work with another shape. As students get
older they will need to become increasingly more sophisticated in terms of how they apply the
attributes of shapes. What we do with them in the early years needs to lay a strong foundation
for future real world applications of shapes.
Procedures:
1. Prior to starting this activity page you will want to decide how it will be completed and in
what sequence. I recommend completing Part One as a whole group. Then allow the students
to complete parts Two and Three on their own.
2. Begin the lesson by distributing the pattern blocks and allowing the students to explore. To
save time in preparation just have the kids pull the required blocks after they explore.
3. Present the concepts in Part One. It is important to have the students actually place the
shapes on the outlines. As you count the sides, have the students try to number them on the
paper.
5. Prior to introducing the concepts in Part Two. Explain how pattern blocks can be used to
make pictures. Have the students practice some of their own designs before turning over the
paper.
6. When you are ready have the students turn over their papers and instruct them how to
complete parts Two and Three.
You may need to provide the students with some help reading the words on this page.
This is a relatively simple activity which is perfect for introduction or reinforcement of concepts.
