INTRODUCTION
1. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), established on September 7, 1990 to cater to the
long – felt needs of the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu: Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi
and Kanyakumari was named after the famous poet – laureate and scholar, Professor P.
Sundaram Pillai. The University has inherited a strong network of over 67 affiliated colleges, 6
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Colleges and 4 Manonmaniam Sundaranar University
Constituent Colleges. Many of these colleges have contributed significantly to the cause of
higher education, of which six colleges including the Sarah Tucker College, Palayamkottai the
oldest women’s college in the state, are over 100 years old.

2. LOCATION
The University is situated at Abishekapatti, 9 Kms from Tirunelveli Junction. A judicious blend
of functional and aesthetic features distinguishes the campus buildings. The serene landscape
and a vast campus of over 550 acres form an ideal setting for the academic community.
The University, sensitive to the complex and diverse needs of the times, has evolved many
innovative programmes. Research and extension activities are not pursued for its own sake,
but are directed towards enriching the social matrix to help build better human beings and
better tomorrow.
Adequate infrastructure facilities and the peaceful campus atmosphere are conducive to the
students to pursue their academic endeavours in an excellent manner.

Note : The University has the right to suspend any Programme if the circumstances so warrant.

Many of the Departments have linkages with premier National & International
Institutions. Research programmes are being carried out in all the departments.
Campus Interview is conducted periodically to cater to the needs of the aspiring
students through Placement Cell.

5. COLLABORATIVE VENTURES
The University is actively engaged in collaborative ventures with individuals and institutions.
The Centre for Environmental Sciences at Alwarkurichi, functioning in collaboration with the
Amalgamations Group, bears testimony to this. Eco-friendly ventures in aquaculture, fishing
and agro-inputs are its thrust areas of Centre for Marine Science and Technology at
Rajakkamangalam. Further, Departments of Mathematics, Communication and Mass Media

and Management Studies and Geo technology have made their mark in the respective field of
study.

6. LIBRARY
The University Library is well equipped and has a good collection of reference sources, books
and journals in printed as well as in electronic form. Internet facility is available to browse any
information in a moment and also efficient Online Public Access Cataloguing Service is
provided to the users. The Library is fully automated with the help of INFLIBNET Centre,
Ahmedabad. The University Library provides research oriented information to its users getting
information from American Information Resource Centre. It has its membership with DELNET
and also providing e-journals service through INFONET.

7. UNIVERSITY HOSTEL
Hostel facility is available for Women and Men students.

8. HEALTH CENTRE
Well equipped Health Centre with Medical Lab and 24 x 7 Ambulance facilities is available in
the University Campus. Insurance coverage is also provided to all the students.

9. INTERNET CENTRE:

An Internet Centre is available for the exclusive utility of the University Students throughout
the day at free of cost. Wi – Fi facility is available in the University Campus.

10. EQUAL OPPORTUINTY CELL
The Equal Opportunity Cell (SC/ST/OBC (Non Creamy Layer) / Minorities Cell) functions for
the welfare of the SC/ST/OBC/Minorities students of the University. The Cell takes the
responsibility for the improvement of overall performance of the SC/ST/OBC/ Minority
students in the competitive examinations so as to bring them up to the expected competitive
level as compared to other communities.

11. METHODOLOGY OF CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM

1. Total number of credits to be acquired for a P.G. Degree: 90 Credits.

2. Duration of the Programme:


Normal Duration 4 Semesters
Maximum Duration 6 Semesters

3. Credits & Programmes:


a) A candidate who successfully completes all the core Programmes,
the project prescribed, the optional and supportive Programmes¸ and
acquires not less than 90 credits and puts the minimum of residence time
will be eligible for receiving the degree.

b) One credit means one teaching period per week for one semester
(16 weeks) for theory Programmes and one laboratory session of two
periods / week for one semester. One teaching period is of 60 minutes
duration.

Total no of papers are divided into 3 categories

1. Core papers are compulsory Programmes on which one student admitted to a particular
programme of study must undergo
2. Elective papers may be chosen by any student from the optionals offered by his/her
Department. Department will try to offer as many optional Programmes as possible.

Supportive Programmes are to be taken from other departments.

I. In all P.G. programmes a project with 10 credits is included.


II.. In the choice of Elective and Supportive Programmes, the student will be guided
by the faculty Advisors / Head of the Department.
III. In general, the Supportive Programmes of 4 credits will be offered in the
second and third semesters.

12. MODE OF APPLICATION

The cost of application form is Rs.500/- and the fee for Entrance test is Rs 150/-. It should
be paid in the form of Demand Draft drawn in favour of The Registrar, M.S.University payable at
Tirunelveli or challan to be remitted into Indian Bank, M.S.University Branch, Abishekapatti,
Tirunelveli-12
a. The application for admission can be downloaded from the website of www.msuniv.ac.in.
Photocopies of downloaded applications may also be accepted

b. Candidates also apply through Online in the University website : www.msuniv.ac.in.

c. SC / ST candidates are exempted from the payment of Application fee for any one
Programme only.
For additional Programmes applied, prescribed application fee should be paid. However, they
have to send the photocopy of the community certificate along the application.
(But they have to pay the Entrance Exam fee of Rs.150/-). The application form should
be filled in by the candidate in his / her own handwriting.

d. The candidate must sign over the photo and get it attested by a gazetted officer.
e. The attested copies of the following certificates should be enclosed with the application form.
a. Plus Two Marksheet.
b. Degree Mark statements (up to V Semester, if the candidate is
awaiting for final Semester result).
c. Degree Provisional Certificate / Diploma (for those who are awaiting
results, a Programme certificate from the Principal is needed).
d. UG Marksheet/Degree Certificate.
e. Transfer Certificate
f. Community Certificate (for SC/ST/BC/BCM / MBC/DNC candidates only)
g. Sports Certificates (if the candidate is an outstanding sports person).
h. NSS Certificate (if the candidate is the best NSS Volunteer).
i. Differently abled Certificate (if the candidate is Differently abled)

Filled in application form along with the attested xerox copies of the above
Certificates DD/Chelan for Rs.650 (500+150) should be sent to the Head of the
Department of the Programme concerned. Xerox Copy of the original application
form along with attested Xerox copies of the above certificates should be sent to
the Registrar, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Abishekapatti, Tirunelveli –
627 012.

Any change in the address of the applicant should be intimated immediately to the
Registrar and to the Head of the Department concerned.

A stamp size photo has to be submitted to the HOD concerned at the time of admission
for the preparation of ID card.

A Common Entrance Examination will be conducted at the University Campus as per


the admission notification.

13. ADMISSION PROCEDURE

a. Ranking for admission will be based on the marks secured in qualifying Plus Two/ UG
Examination and Entrance Examination. 50:50

b. For computation of qualifying examination marks, the first 5 Semesters alone will be
taken into account for those candidates who are awaiting final Semester results.

c. The rules of reservation of seats prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu, 15% for
SC, 3% for SCA, 1% for ST, 30% for BC, 20% for MBC and DNC and 31% for Open
Competition will be followed in admission to each Programme. Among the total number
of seats in the University Departments, 2% will be reserved for outstanding sports
persons and 5% for Physically Handicapped. Eligibility for sports quota is as per G.O.
MS. No. 466 Education, Science and Technology (YI) Department dated 8 June 1994.

d. Candidates selected for admission will be intimated individually through a memo/mail.


The University is not responsible for any delay or loss in postal transit.

e. The selected candidate should submit the following certificates in original at the time
of admission.
(e.i) S.S.L.C
(e.ii) Plus Two Mark Sheet
(e.iii) Degree Mark Statement
(e.iv) Degree Provisional Certificate / Original Degree or Diploma. The
candidates awaiting the results need to submit mark statements up to V
Semester and the Programme Certificate from the Principal.
(e.v) UG Marksheet /Degree Certificate
(e.vi) Transfer Certificate
(e.vii) Community Certificate
(e.viii) Conduct Certificate

14. CONCESSION TO SPASTIC CHILDREN

Dyslexic, Spastic students are permitted to use an amanuensis and additional one
hour (60 minutes) time for each paper will be given in all the University Examinations.

15. RAGGING IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

If any incident of ragging comes to the notice of the University, the concerned student will be
given an opportunity to explain his or her conduct and if his or her explanation is not found
satisfactory, the University will expel him or her from the Institution.
Students should submit an undertaking from parents for not indulging in ragging.

16. DETAIL ABOUT FEE

a.The candidates admitted shall pay the tuition and other fees as specified in the admission letter.
b. In accordance with G.O.Ms.No.722 Social Welfare Department dated 13th October 1977, SC/ST
and SC / ST converted Christians are exempted from the payment of tuition fee and exemption
will be granted only upon the production of Community Certificate (in original). The exemption
does not cover other fees, namely, special fee, laboratory fee, guidance & counseling fee and
contingency fee.

c. Tuition fee, Examination fee and other fees in the University Departments are exempted for the
students belonging to the category of Transgender.

d. Tuition fee, Examination fee and other fees in the University Departments are exempted for the
children who are belonging to the category of folk artist.

FOREIGN STUDENTS

All PG /M.Phil. / PG Diploma in Language and Social Science Programmes


(Department of Tamil, English, History, Sociology, Communication, Management
Studies, Commerce, Physical Education, Education, Economics) - 1000 US Dollars per
year.

All PG / M.Phil. / PG Diploma in Science and Engineering Programmes (Department of


Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Criminology, CITE, CMST, SPKCES, Statistics, Computer
Science, Geo Technology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry) – 2000 US
Dollars per year.

17. STUDENT EVALUATION
a. Choice Based Credit System is followed for all the Programmes.

b. Evaluation is based on continuous internal assessment (25%) and end-semester


examination (75%). The Candidates has to score a minimum of 40% in internal,
minimum of 50% in the end semester examinations and 50% total in each Theory
Paper. For Practicals the internal external marks are 40:60.

c. The University Examination will be held in November/ December in the odd semester
and in April/May in the even semester.

d. A student can be admitted to an examination only upon the submission of the prescribed
application form on or before the prescribed date through Online

e. A minimum of 75% attendance is required to appear for the University Examinations.

f. Students may apply for paper-wise appearance in an examination. But they should
register for all papers in the first appearance in each semester.

g. When a student completes the required 90 credits prescribed for the Programme, Overall
Percentage of Marks (OPM) will be calculated as follows. The marks obtained by the
candidate (sum of external and internal marks) in a paper multiplied by the credits
assigned to the paper. Such weighted marks for all the papers are added and divided
by the total credits (minimum 90).
