Bridge to Terabithia Movie Review

In 2007 director Gabor Csupo, brought the film Bridge to Terabithia to theaters across

the nation. An emotional film about two young kids in a small town that use their imagination to

their fullest capability. Josh Hutcherson, who portrays Jess Aarons who is a 12 year old boy that

enjoys art. AnnaSophia Robb, who portrays Leslie Burke the new girl in town. Lastly, Bailee

Madison, who portrays May Belle Aarons. The film takes place in Lark Creek, a small one

stoplight town with not much adventure for children. Jess doesn't have many friends in school

and likes to stay to himself. While Leslie, who enjoys challenges, excitement, and storytelling

likes to explore and make new friends. Gabor Csupo showcases an emotional story about two

young children who take on adventures in a mystical world and show how they are different

from one another, yet alike in many ways in a touching film.

Early on in the film we are shown the characteristics and personalities of the characters.

Casting directors did amazing job choosing to cast Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb for

this film. Many of us are familiar with AnnaSophia Robb’s amazing work in the 2005 film

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where she portrayed Violet Beauregarde as a selfish, bratty,

gum chewing champion. In the film Bridge to Terabithia we get to experience her soft,

vulnerable, and brave side. Many of us are also familiar with Josh Hutcherson’s brilliant work

such as, the 2005 film Zathura: A Space Adventure and the 2006 film RV. I n both films

Hutcherson’s character is portrayed as stuck up, mean, and conceited. In the film Bridge to

Terabithia we also get to experience Josh’s character like we’ve never seen before. In this film

we get to experience AnnaSophia’s and Josh’s ability to portray two completely different

characters in surprising way.

As an 11 year old the film, Bridge to Terabithia had emotionally impacted me

distractedly. I remember watching the film in the movie theatre and thinking to myself, I’ve

never seen anything like this before. It was so different from any film I’ve seen with Josh

Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb starting in and also in general. The film’s genre is a fantasy

drama, but the movie related to me in ways I didn’t think was possible. The film included many

relatable subject matters that I believe we can all relate to. One relatable subject matter that

impacted me was, Jess’s and Leslie’s relationship with their families. The film does broadcast

the comparison of Jess’s and Leslie’s families and how they’re very much different from one

another. Jess has an emotionally detached relationship with his father, they share a father and son

relationship like many young boys do with their father. Since Jess is the only boy out of five

children throughout the film, we are shown that Jess’s father is more emotionally connected with

his other four daughters. Unlike Jess, Leslie’s relationship with her father is the complete

opposite. They share a loving, positive, and honest father and daughter relationship. Leslie is an

only child so throughout the film we see that she’s not overlooked by her parents the way Jess is

by his parents. By showing the comparison between the two families, director Gabor Csupo does

an excellent job by making the viewers emotionally connected and engaged throughout the film.

To conclude, throughout the film Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb showcased

their characteristics and personalities of their characters in an effective and emotional matter by

fully committing to their roles. Being able to portray two characters with so much emotion takes

an enormous amount of effort. By doing so, this has surprised the viewers that two young actors

that haven’t worked on any previous films remotely similar. They were able to take on a role so

differently than what the viewers are used to. Director Gabor Csupo captivated the audience by

bringing us a film we’ve never seen before while also incorporating real life retable issues.
