Background: 7LM – This is the first lesson of a new scheme of work on spreadsheets. 7LM have done some spreadsheet
work before, but this unit will consolidate and address any misconceptions. The first lesson is an on screen test of
spreadsheets, the pupils will revise what they covered in the previous lessons and then they will take a short on screen test.
Health and safety:
Normal ICT Suite rules, no food no drinks, bags safely under table and coats on back of chairs, no running in ICT room.

Teacher led class discussion on different parts of a spreadsheet. Show Teacher resources.ppt
slide 1 and as a class go through the different parts of a spreadsheet – Row, Column, name box
etc.
Development 1:
• Tell pupils that they will now need to complete the worksheet: 5 mins|09:15
The_Parts_of_a_spreadsheet.doc – show them where to find the file in the shared area
• Set timer 5 mins.
Development 2:
• Get pupils attention 5 mins|09:20
• Show them how to do SUM, Average, MIN and MAX in Excel
• Tell pupils that they now need to complete task 1 from file Task 1.xls 5 mins|09:25
• Set timer 5 mins
Development 3:

• Question: Ask 2 pupils at random to explain in their own words – the difference between
absolute and relative cell reference?
Homework:
• Explain the advantages of using a spreadsheet to organize a school trip.
Differentiation:
Targeted support for SEN students – the teacher will go round to pupils individually to offer help. To accommodate the
visual learners there are several demonstrations by the teacher to aid understanding.
