Floods

Floods are caused by prolonged heavy rain, melting snow, or sudden downpours that overwhelm dry land with water. This saturates the ground like a sponge, causing water to flow over the surface and destroy the environment, livestock, and property. Floods damage Australian lives and cost $300-400 million annually. They typically occur in areas with high rainfall or along rivers in low-lying regions, and can be exacerbated by dam overflows or wall failures.

Floods are the overflow of water, which submerge on the surface of dry land.

They are generally

caused by prolonged periods of compact rain, hasty winter snow or the sudden downpour of
drenching rain that temporary cover normally dry lands with an overflow of inland or tidal waves
from rapid enlargement of surface waters. This saturates the earth’s surface with large amounts
of water, like a sponge and then the water runs straight along the surface, destroying the
environment, livestock and property. Floods are also underestimated for its damage, which can
cause the loss of Australian lives. The damage of this natural hazard can spread from cities to
coastal towns and costs Australia 300-400 million dollars each year. Floods can generally be
located at places where there is high rainfall or where it is very sunny. When rain occurs, it rains
so much that the land cannot soak all of it at a time. This causes an overflow of water in rivers
or the rain can cause a flood on the road. Floods can also be mainly found around dams since
there can be an outbreak of water from the dam. The dam can overflow, or the wall can simply
break down thereby releasing water and causing a flood.
Spatial Distribution:

Floods can occur anywhere in Australia, however they are most common in the north of
Australia as well as the gulf of Queensland in the summer season. Floods in Australia often
occur along rivers in low-lying areas of Australia, such as the Brisbane River.
