Diversity Lesson Plan

Materials:

 The book Voice of Freedom by Fannie Lou Hamer

 Pencils (to write with)

 Lined paper (to create new story)

 Colored Pencils

Standards:

CCSS.ELA- Literacy. RL.1.7- Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the

meaning, tone, or beauty of a text

CCSS.ELA- Literacy. RL.2.3- Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more

individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on

specific information in the text.

Objective:
Students will be able to understand how it was in the past for African Americans.

Students will be able to identify characters who exhibit right and the wrong behaviors

and discuss in groups how they would make a change if they could. Understanding the

right way to treat others with 90% accuracy.

Visualize story and draw emotions of storyteller’s life through their minds with 80%

accuracy

Procedure:

 Introduce Voice of Freedom and what it’s about.

 Ask students if they understand or know anything or anyone about Black History Month

or the past discriminations towards African Americans.

 Discuss how that would make you feel to be treated so poorly and unincluded in every

aspect of life.

 Plan for students to write/draw pictures when they hear something wrong or someone

being treated wrong in the story. Write how it makes them feel or how different then

was to the present.

 Read the first couple parts of the book to the students.

 Group the students by their table to discuss what they wrote and what they heard from

the story. How it makes them feel and what they would change. Write what they have

talked about and agreed on (20 minutes)

 Discuss student’s thoughts and questions as a whole class.


Activities:

 Students individually write their thoughts and opinions about the story and what is

happening to the character. (Lined Paper and Pencil/colored pencil)

 Students individually draw pictures of their feelings and emotions as they hear what the

girl in the story is going through/what they visualize when they are listening.

 Students come together as a group and discuss their different thoughts and opinions and

gather questions they may have.

 Class comes together and discusses everything the students wrote down

Evaluation:

Teacher collects individual and group papers on their thoughts and opinions/ drawings. Graded

by participation and engaging in the discussions.
