They control the noise of ventilating and air- conditioning systems in office buildings, lecture and conference rooms, hotels, hospitals and wherever air-conditioning and ventilating systems are installed In Industrial applications, D-Series Duet Silencers control noise from fans and blowers, cooling towers, dust extraction systems and generators. Excellent low frequency performance combined with minimal aerodynamic pressure drop make H- Series Duct Silencers the ideal choice for noise control in applications such as air-cooled chillers, industrial fans, power station ducting, cooling towers, steam vants, diesel and gas turbine driven equipment. D-Series and H-Series Duct Silencers have a sheet metal outer casing resembling 2 conventional piece of ductwork. Inside the case is a number of splitters which divide the silencer into separate longitudinal airways. As the air or gas passes through these airways, sound is attenuated by the absorbent infil in the splitters, The NAP Silentflo design features a specially formed splitter nose section, parallel airways and a truncated tapered tail to provide lower aerodynamic resistance. The specially formed nose section incorporates a non cylindrical profile providing a longer absorptive section of splitter Whilst retaining a low pressure loss entry. Whilst D-Series Duct Silencers have peak performance at mid frequency bands, H-Series Silencers incorporates extra thick acoustic splitters which enhance the low frequency performance significantly. Figure 1.1: NAP Silentflo Duct Silencers Construction NAP Silentflo Duct Silencers consist of a galvanised sheetmetal case containing side splitters and one or more full splitters. The casing shall be rigidly constructed in accordance with the HVCA Ductwork Specification DW142 or the ASHRAE quide recommendation with a minimum sheet thickness of 0.8mm, For system pressures up to'2500Pa, Pittsburgh seams shall be used with duct sealant to ensure that the silencer case is airtight. Splitters shall have a specially formed solid nose ‘of non-cylindrical profile made from not less than 0.8mm galvanised sheetmetal, followed by a perforated galvanised sheetmetal facing of not less than 0.65mm thickness. A truncated tapered tail shall be incorporated to further reduce resistance to airflow. To ensure a long service life, the solid nose shall be made from continuous sheet and jointed to the perforated facing by 'C’ cleated cross joints without any welding. NAP research has shown that the service life of silencer depends very much on the integrity of the splitter nose and the construction detail of the nose to perforated facing. It is logical to conclude that the lesser the ‘weldings the longer the service life. (Figure 1.1) The sound absorptive infill in the splitters shall be glass fibre or mineral fibre and shall be retained by a perforated galvanised steel sheet, so as to be free from erosion for channel velocities up to 25m/s. The standard acoustic infil is suitable for continuous exposure up to 350°C. Alternative acoustic infils and stainless steel construction is available for temperatures up to 950°C. In some special applications, polyester membrane is placed behind the perforated facing to prevent the ingress of dust, water and/or grease into the absorptive infill. Examples are cooling tower exhaust, kitchen extraction, clean room and hospital ventilation. For passage velocities in excess of 25m/s, special facings such as fibreglass cloth and stainless steel wire meshes are required in addition to the perforated facing to prevent erosion of the ‘absorptive infill. NAP Silentflo Duct Silencers have been used on. cooling towers continuously exposed to the weather without any sign of rust or reduction in acoustic performance, after many years in service. For many industrial applications, heavier construction and enhanced corrosion resistance are required. NAP Silentflo's engineers will be pleased to discuss your specific project needs regarding structural and acoustic requirements ‘and design for corrosion protections.
