DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

MID-SEMESTER EXAMINATION, AC-YEAR: 2018/2019, SEM-II

Course Code: Chen 324 Course Title: Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics-II

Program: III- Year Degree in Chemical Engineering Date: 23/04/2019 Time: 10:00-11:30
Total Mark: 30
Instruction:
 Write your name and Id. Number on the separate answer sheet provided
 Attempt all questions. The worth of each question is given beside it
 Draw neat and labeled flow sheets diagrams whenever necessary
 Ideal Gas constant R = 8.314 kJ/kmol K

Questions:

Q-1 Explain/Define the following.

a. Entropy
b. Helmholtz Free Energy
c. Fugacity Coefficient 5 Marks
d. Chemical Potential
e. Gibb’s Free Energy
5 Marks
Q-2 Derive the Maxwell’s Equations

Q-3 a. Derive the Clausius-Clapeyron equation

b. Calculate the vapour pressure of water at 363 K, if the vapour pressure at 373 K is
5 Marks
101.3 kPa. The mean healt of vaporization in tis temperature range is 22775 kJ/kg.

Q-4 Calculate the internal energy, enthalpy, entropy and free energy for one mole of nitrogen
at 773 K and 100 bar assuming that nitrogen behaves as an ideal gas. The molal heat
capacity of nitrogen at 1 bar is given as Cp = 27.3+4.2x10-3T, where T is in K and Cp is in 10 Marks
J/mol K. Enthalpy of nitrogen is zero at 273 and 1 bar. The entropy of nitrogen is 192.4
J/mol K at 298 K and 1 bar.

Q-5 A 30% by mole methanol-water solution is to be prepared. How many cubic meters of pure
methanol (molar volume, 40.727x10-6 m3/mol) and pure water(molar volume, 18.068x10-6
m3/mol) are to be mixed to prepare 2 m3 of the desired solution? The partial molar 5 Marks
volumes of methanol and water in a 30% solution are 38.632x10 -6 m3/mol and 17.765x10-6
m3/mol, respectively.
