M, M, Q X y Q Q A B: Tutorial 1

The document contains 4 tutorials related to the analysis of thin plates. Tutorial 1 discusses the assumptions in Kirchhoff's plate theory and the derivation of expressions for maximum slope, bending moments, and strain energy in pure bending of plates. Tutorial 2 derives expressions for deflection, moments, and shear in rectangular plates under different loadings using Navier's method. Tutorial 3 uses Levy's method to derive deflection expressions for rectangular plates under uniform and triangular loads. Tutorial 4 considers circular plates under uniform loading and derives expressions for deflection, moments for simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. It also defines singly and doubly curved shells and discusses advantages and disadvantages of shell structures.

Tutorial 1

1. What are the assumptions made in Kirchhoff’s plate theory?

2. (a) Derive the expression of maximum slope for a slightly bent thin plate.
(b) Derive the relations between bending moments and curvatures in pure bending of plates.
(c) Derive the equation of strain energy in pure bending of plates.

3. Discuss the boundary conditions for a plate at (a) free edge, (b) clamped edge and (c) simply supported edge.

Tutorial 2

1. Derive expression of deflection (w), moments (Mx, My, Mxy) and shear (Qx, Qy) for a simply supported thin
x y
rectangular plate (a×b), subjected to sinusoidal loading q  q0 sin sin (Use Navier’s method for solution).

2. Assuming a simply supported square plate of dimension a, derive the expression for w, Mx, and My. Also
determine the maximum deflection of the plate taking only one term in the Fourier series. What will happen to
maximum deflection if thickness of plate is doubled?

3. Calculate the value of maximum deflection ( wmax ) for a simply supported square steel plate of side a = 100 mm
and thickness 1 mm, subjected to a uniformly distributed load q0 = 1 MPa. Use E = 210 GPa and v = 0.3. (Given
q a4
that, wmax  0.00406 0 ).

4. Derive the expression of deflection for a simply supported square plate subjected to a point load P at the centre.
If the plate have 100 mm sides and 1 mm thickness, find the value of P corresponding to maximum deflection of
0.01 mm. Take E = 200 GPa and v =0.3.

Tutorial 3

1. Derive expression of deflection (w) for a simply supported thin rectangular plate (a×b), subjected to udl. Use
Levy’s method for solution.

2. Derive expression of deflection (w) for a simply supported thin rectangular plate (a×b), subjected to a triangular
load of maximum intensity q0 (Use Levy’s method for solution). Derive the expressions for moments (Mx, My, Mxy)
and shear (Qx, Qy) for the same.

Tutorial 4

1. Circular plate (of radius a) is subjected to uniformly distributed load of intensity q all over the plate. Derive the
expression for deflection, radial and tangential moments when plate is (a) Simply supported, (b) Clamped plate,
(c) Also find the ratio of maximum deflection for the simply supported and the clamped plate (take poisons ratio
as 0.3).

2. Derive the equation of deflection for a simply supported circular plate with a central hole having uniform load
q0 along its inner edge.

3. (a) Define singly curved shell and doubly curved shell. (b) Describe the advantages and disadvantages of shell
structures.
