LAB REPORT#5
TRANSMISSION LINE MODELLING USING LINE-CALC, MICROSTRIP, CO-PLANAR WAVEGUIDE,
COAXIAL LINE, IMPLEMENTATION OF COMPUTED DIMENSIONS IN ADS
OBJECTIVES:
To understand line Calc in ADS.
INTRODUCTION:
A transmission line connects a generator to a load – a two port network. TEM Electric and magnetic fields
are orthogonal to one another, and both are orthogonal to direction of propagation. RF transmission lines
carry an AC signal through a controlled-impedance transmission medium. This contains the EM field and
minimizes loss and coupling to other nearby structures.
The transmission line is modelled with a resistance (R) and inductance (L) in series with a capacitance (C)
and conductance (G) in parallel. The total loss of power in a transmission line is often specified in decibels
per meter (dB/m), and usually depends on the frequency of the signal.
Different types of transmission line modelling is used such as:
 Co-planar waveguide: Co-planar waveguide is a type of electrical planar transmission line which
can be fabricated using printed circuit board technology, and is used to convey microwave-
frequency signals. On a smaller scale, coplanar waveguide transmission lines are also built into
monolithic microwave integrated circuits.
 Coaxial line: Coaxial cable is used as a transmission line for radio frequency signals. Its
applications include feedlines connecting radio transmitters and receivers to their antennas,
computer network (Internet) connections, digital audio (S/PDIF), and distributing cable television
signals.
