Design and Implementation of Automated Blood Bank Using Embedded Systems

The document proposes an Automated Blood Bank system using a Raspberry Pi computer and GSM technology to connect blood donors and recipients. The system allows people in need of blood to search for willing donors, even in rural areas without internet access, by connecting callers to donors via SMS. It aims to fulfill every blood request quickly by taking the donor's location into account to contact the nearest match. Future improvements could include online databases and automatic call routing to handle more traffic.

Design and Implementation of Automated Blood Bank

using Embedded Systems

I. Introduction
The world has multiple blood banks, in different countries. However, most of the
blood banks doesn’t offer the capability to connect the donor and the recipient.
The author proposes an Automated Blood Bank to bring voluntary donors and the
people who need the blood on a common platform. There are many cases where
donors are needed in very short periods of time. Around thirty eight thousand
donations are required daily. Automated System tries to help people in need of blood.
The system find blood donors by using GSM based Smart Card CPU- Raspberry Pi
B+ Kit
II. Automated Blood Bank

The brain of the system is the Rasbperry Pi B+ that is a credit card sized laptop that
can do many things that a desktop computer will do. Furthermore, the system use the
global system for mobile communication (GSM) that is an accepted standard for
digital cellular communication. Through this application, people in needs of blood
look for donors who are willing to gift blood. The mission of this system is to fulfill
every blood request in the country, including people who lives in some parts of the
country without any internet connection.

III. Results and Output

Nowadays, in internet are available many blood banks. However in emergency

situations, when there is urgent need of blood, it may not possible to connect internet.
This model connect immediately the caller with the donor via SMS (Short Messaging
Service). It means, that the system doesn’t required an Internet access. This enable
the system to be used in rural areas.

Another advantage of this system is that location details of prospective donors is taken
into account by the algorithm. This is important to make sure that the system contacted
with the nearest donor and immediate fulfillment of blood requirement is done.
As future work, it is proposed to implement multiple number of parallel ports
provided, considerable amount of traffic can be easily handled. Furthermore, online
database aided with automatic call routing facility can improve the system for
immediate fulfillment of blood requirement.
