Field Experience #1
1. At Goolsby elementary the teachers meet their students by the playground. A bell
will ring in the morning signaling the students to line up and the teachers to join
them. The teachers who are on playground duty usually just stand and watch the
kids and talk. The teachers all have different schedules for their students. The
teachers walk their students from class to either the elective they have assigned that
day or lunch/recess.
2. Students are always expected to be on their best behavior. When walking between
classes or lunch/recess. They walk in a single file line with their finger on his/her own
lips signaling to be quiet. They line up in alphabetical order. The first person in line is
supposed to be the door holder and second in line is the line leader. In the class
room the students are supposed to sit in their seats unless told otherwise. The
teachers give plenty of time for the students to get up and walk around. In the lunch
room the students grab their lunch pail from the bin with their class name on it or
buy their lunch. Each grade has a spot in the lunch room that they are supposed to
sit at. They are expected to sit the whole time during lunch. They raise their hand if
they need help with anything.
3. The specials they offer at Goolsby are Physical Education, Art, Music, and Library.
2.
1. From what I read in the Clark County Teacher handbook, it is the office that deals
with the students leaving early and teachers do not directly handle it. I also read that
a handwritten note from the parent should be given to the office and inform the
teacher.
2. Fire Drills are supposed to be held once a month. All the Teachers should have a fire
escape route diagram for their classroom (which is approved by the chief of the fire
department).
3. I did not find anything in the Handbook about shelter in place drills. I know you are
supposed to lock your classroom door and have the students sit quietly in their seats
with the lights off.
4. Teachers are allowed to have a first aid in the classroom. They may use it for any
minor injuries like a papercut. Anything more serious should be handled by the EMS
(Emergency Medical Services) who is called by the front office.
5. I thought it was weird how I couldn’t find anything about maternity leave anywhere
on the CCSD website or in the handbook. I looked through all the things about
medical leave but never found anything about maternity. Maybe it varies school to
school or I just was not looking hard enough.
3.
1. After school Goolsby Elementary has a bunch of clubs. They have the Good News
Club, Drama Club, Boy Scouts, Piano, and a Spanish Language Academy. They also
have the Annual APEX FUN RUN. They also do an annual book fair.
2. Goolsby has a “partnership” with Dave and Busters.
Field Experience #2
1.
a. Date: November 13, 2017 / School: Goolsby Elementary School 11175 W Desert Inn
Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89135 / Grade Level 2
b. – c. On other paper
e. In the classroom it feels a little crammed and closed in. If I were to change the
classroom I would move the File cabinets to the side of the room where the
computer is and put the computer and computer table over by the books. I
probably would not have a student of the week rocking chair but probably a
bean bag because it is easier to move. The teacher I did my field experience with
was slightly disorganized and had papers laying around everywhere and spilling
out of files. I would keep my room more organized. I don’t think I would add
anything else except more organization materials like bins.
2.
a. Her room arrangement is easy for the kids to follow and helps flow traffic easily.
b. Yes, the room was pretty good on traffic. The only time kids have trouble was when
they went to get books. It was sort of a small area and not much room for them
c. The teacher is hardly ever at her desk and is usually standing in front of the
room. You can clearly see the kids from every angle of the room.
d. The materials the children used the most are kept in their cubbies or in their
desks. Yes, they are easily accessible.
e. The taller students are sat in the back desks to ensure everyone can see the
board when in use.
3. Some weaknesses of this arrangement are that the room feels slightly closed in. Otherwise
the room is arranged very well for the class size. I think no rearrangements should be
made to this classroom. “Don’t fix what is not broken”
4.
a. There are 22 students in the classroom. They range from the ages of 7 to 8. There are
boys and girls in the class. Slightly more boys than girl.
b. There is one student who is slightly isolate from the rest of the class. I believe this
because he does not necessarily interect with the rest of the students and tends
to be by himself during class. He reads at a level 3 when he should be a 28 and I
think this makes him feel out of place. Which leads him to not interacting with
students.
c. I noticed that the students who read at a higher reading level raise their hands more
often to answer questions. Most of the kids raise their hands to ask questions
that they have. It is really encouraged in the classroom.
d. The students are all really well behaved. There are no specific issues with the kids
who sit in the back of the room.
e. Students who do kind things and help the other students receive the most praise.
f. No students are purposely ignored. They all get a very fair amount of attention. The
kids who need a little more help in the class will get more attention than others,
but it is not obvious. The students in the classroom are very energetic and polite.
They know their routine and what is allowed in the classroom and what is not.
They are very respectful. There are moments when they get a little too noisy but
they only need one reminder for them to quiet down. They all love Mrs. Susich
(the teacher). They listen and respect her. They are comfortable around her and
are not afraid to ask any questions they have. To attend this school is great. They
encourage creativity and fun in the classrooms. Both my nephews go here and
they both love it very much. They get lots of recess time and lunch time. The
school is a little hard to navigate at first but once you get used to it, it is not hard.
The office and principal are all very nice people. There is very open
communication between parents and staff.
