Rounding Decimals: Lesson Reflection

The lesson taught was on rounding decimals for 4th grade students. The teacher planned effectively by consulting the mentor teacher about student levels. During the lesson, the teacher called on students randomly to solve problems on the board, giving them practice and confidence. Areas for improvement included spending more time on place values before rounding, providing place value charts, involving all students during modeling, giving students work during modeling, and demonstrating center activities. The teacher aims to apply the gradual release model more fully.

Lesson reflection:

Rounding decimals

Name: Salama Mohammed Alneyadi

ID: H00357762
The lesson I taught was rounding decimals. The standers that I am addressing in this lesson were to teach

students how to round decimal numbers using place value. This lesson is for grade 4 students, which took place

at Mohammed Bin Khaled school. My goal for this lesson is to teach students how to round decimal numbers

using place value.

The things that went well in my lesson are: planning for the lesson. Before I start to plan, I asked my school

mentor teacher about the student’s level, this helped me to choose the suitable activities for the students to

match their level. Using this way helped me also to observe the students’ progress in the class during the lesson.

As a result, it helped me to know which student understood the concept of the lesson. Another thing that went

well in my lesson is calling on students randomly by using class dojo to solve a problem on the board. This brings

me to my next point which is to give the students a chance to practice the math skills in the lesson. Moreover,

it will give the students confidence in trying to solve math problems.

There are different things that are needed to be improved for this lesson. The first thing before I start the

lesson, I have to give the students a chance to practice place values, because students have to know the different

place values in order to round the decimal numbers. So, next time I will do a small activity in the beginning of

the lesson to remind the students what is place values. Also, I will provide a place value chart to each group in

the class as a tool to help them during center activity time. Furthermore, I need to include all of the students

during the modeling stage of the lesson. For instance, I have to think out loud and ask them to help me with the

steps of the problem.

Another thing that got my attention that I didn’t notice before is that I have to give the students something

to do even when I am modelling the lesson skill for them. For example, ask them to do the problem in their

groups then we will check it together.

The final thing that I will improve in my lesson is to demonstrate the center activities for the students in front

of the class. Next time I will try to have a sample of the different centers in the lesson and actually do them for

the students in front of the class. As we learn in our math course this semester about gradual release model,
that the teacher has to do the skill first, then we do it together as a class and finally, give the students time to

practice individually.
