Physics Lab 3

The students conducted an experiment to determine the initial velocity of a projectile using a spring gun. They measured the range and vertical distance fallen of the projectile over 5 trials. The average initial velocity calculated was 477.61 m/s. Sources of error included small variations in the spring gun's position between shots. Proper positioning of the gun could help reduce this error.

Experiment No. 3
PROJECTILE MOTION
OBJECTIVE:

To determine the initial velocity of a projectile by measurement of its range and vertical distance
of fall during its flight.

APPARATUS:

1. Spring Gun Ballistic Pendulum (1 set)

2. Meterstick
3. Carbon Paper

DISCUSSION:

A projectile is an object launched into space without motive power of its own, which travels
freely under the action of gravity and air resistance only. A missile shot from a gun, or a baseball that is
thrown or battered, are such examples wherein an initial velocity is imparted to the object to set it to
motion. This motion is one that is of constant acceleration, due to gravity directed downward. There is
no horizontal component of acceleration; hence the horizontal component of the velocity will be
constant.

PROCEDURE:

I. Determination of initial Velocity of Projectile from Measurement of Range and Fall

1. Set the apparatus as shown in Fig. 1 Clamp the frame table to insure, that the
apparatus is steady. Check whether it is placed accurately horizontal using a spirit level.
The pendulum is held on the rack so that it will not interfere with the free flight of the
ball.
2. Pull the trigger allowing the ball to hit the floor a few meters away from the foot of
the table show. The exact position on the floor where the ball strikes should be carefully
watched. A piece of paper laid in a box on the floor at the proper place and covered with
carbon paper will aid in exact determination in the spot at which the ball strikes the
floor.
3. Shoot the ball five times and note the point at which it strikes the floor. Measure the
distance R and h. From the average values of R and h, calculate the initial velocity of the
ball using equation (6).

DATA AND RESULTS:

TRIAL R h v
1st 195.4 82 477.9
2nd 196.5 82 480.59
3rd 195.2 82 477.41
4th 195 82 476.92
5th 194.3 82 475.21

Ave 195.3 82 477.61

QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS:

1. Describe the result of from the first method.

- It is understood that the range of each projection is never far from each other because of
the constant height.
2. Derive the formula for the horizontal range, R of a projectile having an initial speed Vₒ and an
angle of projection θ ₒ Then show the projection angle of 45 ° gives the maximum
horizontal range.
-
3. Derive the maximum height h reached by the projectile.
-

4. Find the angle of projection at horizontal range and the maximum height of a projectile are
equal.

5. A gun is aimed horizontally at a target 100ft. away. The bullet hits the target 3 in below the
aiming point. What is the muzzle of the rifle?

6. Discuss some possible sources of error in this activity. How can this error be reduced?

- Some errors are in measurements because sometimes the spring gun moves when fired so in
order to reduce error we measured the position of the gun so that it could stay in the same
place when fired.

REMARKS AND CONCLUSIONS:

In conclusion, this lab allowed us to investigate projectile motion by determining the initial velocity
given to the ball and ultimately predict the range of a projectile. Projectile Motion equations were used
to predict the range in this projectile motion lab. There could have been resistance within the launcher
itself during various launches to cause the slight differences found. Even though my percent difference
was very high, this experiment still served its purpose to allow investigation of projectile motion.
