Week 3 Blog

The document provides guidance for weekly journal entries for a filmmaking project. It emphasizes reflecting on what has been learned and how research has improved ideas, rather than just describing activities. For week three, the student discusses research conducted into the decline of music education through primary interviews and secondary sources. The research helped narrow the target audience and decide to interview those in music education. Platform research led to choosing YouTube, and character research informed people to interview. Test shoots provided experience with lighting and camera techniques. Further research is still needed on platforms, genres, and artists to stay on track.

Week Three - Research

RESEARCH

What did you learn from your I learned a lot from my research, this includes primary and
research? secondary research. From my primary research I found about
what others think about the decline in music education and also
what type of documentary best suits this topic, which previously
established is an expository documentary.
In terms of secondary research, I found many articles regarding
the decline in music education as well as videos which I have
analysed explaining everything about the issues in music
education, I have also found a politics brief with information
about it.

How has the research into your target The research from my target audience has influenced my
audience helped you improve your decision making in the sense that it has allowed me to consider
ideas? what to use in my documentary, I have narrowed down my
target audience to be anybody over the age of 16, and more
specifically it is for music students and teachers. This made me
think that the best thing to do would be to interview only those
who have been involved in music education and those who
have strong opinions on the subject so that this information
produced by the interviewees will be relevant and interesting.

How has the research into your The research into my platform has made me decide which
platform helped you improve your platform is best for my idea, I eventually narrowed down to
ideas? YouTube being my best and also only option, but I also
completed extensive research on the advantages and
disadvantages of other platforms such as television, Netflix and
other internet platforms. I also did research on platforms that
would be good for promoting and advertising, such as social
media platforms like Facebook, twitter and Instagram. I decided
on YouTube being the best platform for me because it is the
easiest platform to use also the most effective, but also the only
platform I have access to upload to.

How has researching characters and I had to try and find people to interview for my project, so I had
actors helped you decide who to to consider who would be best for a documentary on music
cast? education and thought it would be best to find those who have
been involved in music education to hear what they have to say
about it.

What have you learned from your I have learned how to set up interviews for my test shoots and
test shoots? How will you use these also how to work with the lighting and camera techniques. I had
ideas in your production? also learned this from videos I researched.

What work do you need to complete I need to finish up on all elements of research to stay on track,
outside of lessons to stay on track? including platform research, genre research, and artists research.

High Grade Tips

Research
● ‘Thorough research’ - include plenty of sources and detailed analysis of this information
● ‘relevant & coherent’ – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the Media
product you hope to make - and talk about how they inform your planning
● ‘sustained’ – continue your research throughout the eleven-week project and don’t just limit it to
the first two weeks
● ‘accomplished & considered’ – all of the above referred to in your daily/weekly reflections
