Chapter 3 (V45) PDF

The document examines the flexural stress, diagonal tensile stress, tensile stress of post-tensioned tendons, and tensile force of stay cables in the main girder of a bridge. It provides tables summarizing the limit stresses, load combinations considered, and judgments about whether stresses are within allowable limits during construction, under dead loads, and at the service limit state. Checks are performed both immediately after construction and at the creep end state, considering different numbers of traffic lanes.

The tensile stress of Stay cable shall be less than the restricted stress during construction and service stage. The restricted
stress of stay cable as follow:

Table 3.7: Restricted stress of stay cable

State Stay cable Stress limit (MPa) Load combination

Permanent stay 0.6 fpu = 1116 D+EL+PS+CR+SH

During
Construction
Temporary stay 0.7 fpu = 1302 D+EL+PS+CR+SH

Tensile stress -1 0.50 fpu = 930 Service limit State (SLS)

At Service
Tensile stress -2 * fpu Strength Limit State (ULS)

Note: * According to FIB – Article A3.2.3, checking Stay cable at ULS as follow:

In our case, we can use safety factor  = 1.35 which mean the resistance factor = 1/ = 1/1.35 = 0.74.

CABLE CHECKING
Item: Cable - Main Span P20

1. INPUT DATA
Specification: 22TCN 272-05
1.1. Material Spec. A421M-98a Strand Type 15.7 mm
Minimum specified ultimate tensile stress of prestressing stay cable f's = 1860 MPa
Minimum yield stress of prestressing stay cable fy = 1674 MPa
Modulus of elasticity of cable stayed Ep = 195000 MPa
Linear density of strand gs = 0.013 KN/m
1.2. Dimentions
Area of 1 strand Astr = 150.00 mm2
• The cables are arranged symmetrically in longitudinal and transeverse direction.
2. CHECKING
2.1. Resistance factor Load modifier = 1.05
Strength f = 0.74
Service f = 0.50
2.2. Equivalent Modulus of Elasticity
• In the inclined cables "sag" is caused by their self weight and, the cables have nonlinear
force-displacement relationships. Therefore, their linearization is needed for simplification of design.
• The equivalent modulus of elasticity proposed by Ernst formula is used for the linearization.
• Ernst formula for equivialent modulus of elasticity

E Where: E : Young's Modulus of cable

E eq  (Tangent modulus of elasticity) g : unit volumetric weight
 l2 2
1 E ℓ : cable length
12 f 1 3 f1 : initial stress (for dead load)

CABLE CHECKING
Item: Cable - Side Span P20

1. INPUT DATA
Specification: 22TCN 272-05
1.1. Material Spec. A421M-98a Strand Type 15.7 mm
Minimum specified ultimate tensile stress of prestressing stay cable f's = 1860 MPa
Minimum yield stress of prestressing stay cable fy = 1674 MPa
Modulus of elasticity of stay cable Ep = 195000 MPa

E eq  (Tangent modulus of elasticity) g : unit volumetric weight of cable
 l 2 2
1 E ℓ : cable length
12 f 1 3 f1 : initial stress (for dead load)

Combine with TU – Total (LL+TU) 920 183

Due to 0.5TG (Gradient temperature) -18 -18

Combine with TG – Total (LL+TU+0.5TG) 911 174

Note:
- Unit: kN
- Legend: Positive value means compressed, negative value means uplift.
3.10 Bending moment capacity of Main girder (MG)
The bending moment capacity of MG is determined base on AASHTO standard (include consider ther load modifier 1.05)
and rebar arrangement of MG is following as bellow:

Rebar arrangement at P19 side span

Rebar arrangement at P19 center span

Rebar arrangement at P20 center span

Rebar arrangement at P20 side span

The results of checking bending moment capacity of Main girder:

Case 1: After construction (Consider 04 lanes for Liveload).

Case 2: At creep end (Consider 05 lanes for Liveload)

Conclusion: There are several sections not enough capacity for Bending Resistance, need to add more rebars on Top
