10. Proposed Research Problem:

Broad Title of Thesis: “Livelihood economics of Gujjars of Kangra Districts of Himachal Pradesh”

a) Brief Outline of Work:

India is one of the countries having large concentration of tribal population. In this respect, India ranks
second in the world. There are 537 different tribal communities spread all over India. As far as HP is
concerned, according to 2011 census, the ST population was 31.57%. Out of 3617 villages in Kangra, 176
villages is having more than 40% tribal population. One such tribe is Gujjar, mostly pastoral, of Himachal
Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and certain other states of India, whose main
occupation is buffalo rearing. They wonder in search of pasture lands for their livelihood throughout the
year.
The Gujjar is nomadic tribe of Kangra District. While the Hindu Gujjars, have permanently settled, their
Muslim counterparts are still sticking to nomadic patriotism. The Muslim Gujjars are deeply attached to
their tribal customs, rites and rituals. These nomads climb up the hills during summer and return to the
plains in winter. The economy of these Gujjars is mainly dependent on the animal husbandry and
forests. Most of them are landless and their economic status depends upon the number of buffaloes
one possesses. Illiteracy has been found to be major cause of their backwardness.
The nomadic Gujjars of Kangra districts have to face number of problems at upper, lower reaches/plains
and in transition.These problems are due to harsh nature, forest department rules, shortage of food
availability, fodder marketing for milk, rain, snowfall which causes losses to their livestock.
