Emma Hackathorn participated in a Rotary Youth Exchange program from 2016-2018 where she lived in Sweden. She learned Swedish, embraced a new school environment, and formed lifelong relationships. She faced challenges with maturity and demonstrated life skills that will serve her well. Dear Dean of Admissions,

It is my pleasure to wholeheartedly recommend that Emma Hackathorn should be accepted as a
student at your school.
I had the pleasure of mentoring and working with Emma during the process of applying for,
preparing for, and participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program from September
2016 – August 2018. I was Emma’s primary mentor and supervisor during this time.
Emma has been successful in her studies and work both here and abroad, and I would like to
specifically address her character and demonstrable strengths.
The RYE program requires exceptional timeliness, patience, and adaptability – just to complete
the application and student visa processes. As an ambassadorial program with a core mission of
building peace and mutual understanding among the nations and cultures of our world, the
program places strict rules on the youth ambassadors and expects them to model exemplary
behavior while engaging in a culture, language, family, school, and country that is entirely new to
them, for up to a full year. Not all participants complete their exchange, for varying reasons.
Emma represented her home, country, and Rotary very well, and completed the full term of her
exchange.
During her exchange, Emma became functionally fluent in the Swedish language, embraced the
opportunity to participate in an entirely new school environment, connected with her host families
and Swedish schoolmates, and forged what are sure to be meaningful life-long relationships.
She faced challenges with great maturity, nurturing and consistently demonstrating the life-skills
which were required in order to succeed in the exchange program. I am certain that these skills
will carry forward into the rest of her life.
Through her actions before, during, and following her exchange, Emma has proven herself to be
dependable, engaged, able to consider multiple viewpoints in a fair and balanced manner,
adaptable, and above all, entirely trustworthy.
I encourage you to help place Emma in any educational, work, or volunteer setting she applies
for, even if she currently happens to be outside what you consider a ‘perfect match’ for your
selection criteria. She is up to the challenges that your opportunity will provide!

Best regards,

Ian Schatz Outbound Student Officer 2012 – 2019
