Final Review Project

This document describes the design and implementation of a photovoltaic (PV) fed battery charger using a DC-DC converter with maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The objective is to create a simple and cost-effective PV battery charger with increased efficiency. Key aspects include a block diagram of the PV battery charger, advantages over existing systems, software and hardware used, and simulations/implementation of open loop and closed loop MPPT systems using a buck-boost converter.

OBJECTIVE
To design and implement a simple
and cost-effective Photovoltaic based
battery charger with increased
efficiency using DC-DC converter
employing Maximum Power Point
Tracking.

CHARGER USING MPPT
EXISTING SYSTEM
• The Existing System uses other algorithms
like Incremental conductance method, Fuzzy
logic controller, Open circuit voltage method,
short circuit current method which has
complex computing.
• The conventional P and O method also has
demerits like Voltage Oscillations and
increased time of Tracking.
ADVANTAGES OF PROPOSED SYSTEM

• We are designing a simple Stand-alone PV

based battery charger harvesting high power
from solar energy.
• The system we proposed is simple in
computing and is cost effective.
• The design can be altered easily according to
the user’s need.
• The voltage Oscillation is reduced.
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENT
• GEDA
• NG SPICE
• GNU OCTAVE
• PROTEUS
• ARDUINO IDE
HARDWARE IMPLEMENTATION

• PV Panel-40 watts
• Arduino Uno
• ACS712 Current sensor
• Voltage sensor
• Buck-Boost converter Module
• Battery-12V
• LCD display (16*2)
Our Work
• Simulation in GEDA,ngspice
• Development of code in Arduino UNO
• Hardware implementation
BASIC DESIGN OF BUCK BOOST
CONVERTER
OPEN LOOP SYSTEM

In the open loop system we use buck-boost

converter and PWM to attain Maximum power.

Buck boost converter is used as it operates in

the whole region of the characteristics of
Photovoltaic cell. i.e the load line will track the
maximum power point in the entire curve.

CLOSED LOOP SYSTEM
In closed loop System we use Buck-boost
converter and the feed back network is used.
This feed back network consists of First order
Filters, toggle flip flop, PWM module and other
components.
The voltage and current is sensed and it is
processed and corresponding signal is
generated and the MOSFET drive is triggered
with this signal to attain Maximum Power.
