0. INTRODUCTION.

I would like to start by saying that the knowing the most important geographycal, historical
and cultural framework of the english speaking countries contribute to develop the keys
competences. Nowaday, in our current educational legislation (Royal Decree 126/2014
28th of February and the Order 17th of March 2015, you can find the relacionship
between the knowledge and the develop of the keys competences.

On the one hand the educational system pretend to develop de Communicative


Competence in our students. If you want to develop this comptence it is necesary to teach
not only vocabulary, grammar, rules… you need to teach geographycal, historical and
cultural framework. Moreover, students need to know the different aspects about the
english speaking countries in a globalized world where the English language is used or the
most language used is the english.

On the other hand i would like to say that the students needs to know geographycal
aspects, historical currents and cultural manifestations to develop the communicative
competence and the others keys competences. The knowledge of a language is not only
the most important. The most important is apreciate and lear about others aspects which
contribute to be better persons.

Finally, according with differents authors we can find that there are a direct relation
between motivation and academic results. If you want to get good academic results, you
must increse the motivation of your students. In this sense, the knowledge about
geographycal, cultural aspects or historical succes can help to develop the student´s
motivation. For this reason, in the ultimate part of the topic you can find a didactic
aplication of geography, history and cultural aspects which contribute to develop the
communicative and social competence.
1. GEOGRAPHYCAL, HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL FRAMEWORK OF THE ENGLISH
SPEAKING COUNTRIES.

In this section, we are going to explain the most outstanding features of the English
speaking countries which can be interesting to use in the english language class in order to
favor a more natural language learning. This knowledge is necesary if we want to develop
the competencial level of our students.

1.1. The United Kingdom.

Geography:

The United Kingdom is located in Western Europe and it is between the North Atlantic
Ocean and the North Sea. The United Kigdom comprises a group of about 5.000 islands.
The largest island is Britain (Great Britain) which includes England, Wales and Scotland. The
next larges island is Irleand wich is compose for Northerm Ireland and the Irish Republic.

Britain´s physical area covers 242.842 kilometres. The most montainous región is Scotland,
with Britain´s highest peak: Ben Nevis (1.343 m). Rivers in Great Britain are quite short. The
longest and more important rivers are the Severn and the Thames.
